A big thank you to all of the parents who attended the Parent Council meeting on Monday night. Plans for the Parent Social and Springfest were updated, and both should prove to be great events. I'm very sorry for not being able to make this Friday, but I have important family matters to attend. This will be the first time I've missed the social in 10 years! I'm confident the event will be a great success. A big thank you to Mrs.Needham and the committee for the enormous amount of time and effort they have put forth in organizing the night.
At the Parent Council meeting, we shared our staffing numbers. Our projected student enrollment number is 616 for September 2016, down from our current enrollment of 633. We have been allocated 32.5 teachers. Over the next couple of weeks, we will continue to finalize the organization of next year's classes and staff assignments. We will share these when the models are finalized. Our staffing committee, comprised of teachers, have been working diligently on the aforementioned.
The school Day schedule has been posted on our website. It is the same as this year's schedule.
This week, there was an announcement from the Ministry regarding new math initiatives. We will share information with you when we get direction from TDSB.

On Monday, our grade 6 students participated in a presentation from Brian Cheaney from Cosmic Connections. The topic was on Astronomy, a unit of study. After learning about constellations and the stars, the kids had the opportunity to observe the sun through a telescope. Many parents and their children returned at night for another presentation and a peek at the moon. A big thank you to Ms. Chandra, our middle school science teacher, who organized this event. We've never had this type of workshop and it was a big hit!

Just a gentle reminder that PC continues to search for volunteers to help with Springfest. Again, please sign up through the website. Springfest is such an important tradition in the community and it continues to be a favourite for the children. Monies raised at the event goes towards funding operating budgets.
I posted some information for you on the weekly Bulletin regarding concussions. If your child has suffered from a concussion, please make sure you come to the office to complete paperwork required to return to physical activity.

End of Week-March 22, 2013
Welcome back everyone! I trust that you and your family had a great March Break. Hopefully the weather will turn warmer pretty soon as I'm getting a bit tired of the snow; just like most of you!
We had a productive first week back as we welcomed Ms. Luckman, a new student teacher to Dr. Grant's class. As some of you know, we host a few candidates a year to encourage collaboration and mentorship among teachers. Teachers enjoy having the students as they usually provide new ideas and activities to the classroom.
On Wednesday, our grade 6-8 students listened to Mr. Vollum who presented a workshop called, "The Social Web 101". He gave some sound advise and practical suggestions mainly around the new privacy settings on Facebook. Parents were invited back that night to hear Mr. Vollum speak on issues and concerns around social media.
Staff continue to teach the final curriculum outlined in the grade long range plans. These plans are on the website if you want to look at them further and keep in contact with the teachers if you have any questions. We are excited to be sending some grade 3 teachers to a workshop next week to learn more about "student inquiry" and the Ministry's "Co-Learn" initiative.

Thank you for coming to the school on Tuesday to support the Photography Exhibition. The grade 8 students including Bella, Maddie, Morganna, Teighan, Katie, Emily, Scott, Christian, Cam, Georgia, Sammy and David should be very proud of the work they did to put on such a great show. Congratulations to all of our budding photographers in Mr. Blais' class, Mrs. Taylor's class and the two grade 8 classes. A special congratulations goes to the top six photographers in grade 8; Bella, Cam, Lucas, Maddie, Morganna and Christian. The grade 5-8 students and adults voted on these six for their favourite photo. Congratulations to the top three students including Lucas (waterfall), Cam (bird on beach) and Bella (flower); their photos will be displayed at the Contact Exhibition at the AGO from May 14th - May30th.

April Events
We had a very interesting week at LKS beginning with our long awaited production of Beauty and the Beast. We congratulate all those involved including the students, staff and parent volunteers. It was so entertaining and the kids had such a great time. Thank you for supporting this very large endeavor.
Springfest is Going GREEN!!

Be sure to keep Saturday May 15th free from 10am-2pm for the annual LKS Springfest Celebration. In keeping with our eco-theme, Springfest is going green....we're aiming for less packaging, less waste, and more fun for everyone!
The Silent Auction will publish all items (including pictures!!) on an online blog instead of sending out the paper catalogue. Stay tuned for the blog address in the next few weeks.....
The ever-popular Tombola game will still be the same, we're just adding some new twists! Instead of buying all those tombola's, we are asking parents to instead purchase one or more $5 tombola leaves. Each classroom will display their leaves on a tree and the class with the most leaves will still win the traditional pizza lunch. Half of the money collected will go directly to the school, and the other half will help buy grand prizes for the game. Remember to bring your own coffee mug and tote bag to carry all your goodies, and please use the recycling bins on site.

Finally, as some of you may know already, some of our families in the community have suffered losses recently as close family members have passed away. Yesterday we attended a funeral for the mother of one of our students. It is during these times we really do have to lean on each other and be as supportive as we can. Our thoughts continue to be with our families who are in similar situations currently.
We are looking forward to all the earth celebrations next week. Once again our Eco Committee has done a fabulous job of bringing in activities for the kids to continue to bring awareness and education to the school community. Please look for their calendar of activities on our website.

A Successful Springfest!
Thank you to all the parents who helped organize Springfest! What a great day for the community...and the weather proved to be on our side! A special congratulations to Kati in grade 4 who will be spending the day with me and Mr. Mclean for winning 'Principal for the Day'!
Just a reminder that Parent Council will be meeting on Monday @ 7:30 p.m. in the library. Fundraising ideas will be on the agenda for those of you interested in this area.
Bruce Davis is also holding a Ward Meeting at Islington P.S. @ 6:30 p.m. The TDSB Budget Process will be the topic.
Congratulations to Julia, Avery, Kyle and Scott in grade 8 for competing at the Waterloo Canada Skills Provincial Final where they demonstrated tremendous teamwork. Also, to Ian, David, Laura, Julia, Khrystyna and Jennifer for placing second at the Canadian Fluid Power Challenge with a remarkable score of 93%. Thank you to Dr. debraga for always being supportive of these really special challenges.
Just a reminder that schools starts back on September 8th, 2009. The students will not be here in August, only staff. The Ministry hasn't approved our school year calendar yet indicating holidays, PA days, etc. When we get that (hopefully soon), we will post for you.

Just a reminder that Parent Council will be meeting on Monday @ 7:30 p.m. in the library. Fundraising ideas will be on the agenda for those of you interested in this area.
Bruce Davis is also holding a Ward Meeting at Islington P.S. @ 6:30 p.m. The TDSB Budget Process will be the topic.
Congratulations to Julia, Avery, Kyle and Scott in grade 8 for competing at the Waterloo Canada Skills Provincial Final where they demonstrated tremendous teamwork. Also, to Ian, David, Laura, Julia, Khrystyna and Jennifer for placing second at the Canadian Fluid Power Challenge with a remarkable score of 93%. Thank you to Dr. debraga for always being supportive of these really special challenges.
Just a reminder that schools starts back on September 8th, 2009. The students will not be here in August, only staff. The Ministry hasn't approved our school year calendar yet indicating holidays, PA days, etc. When we get that (hopefully soon), we will post for you.

Springfest
As I write this, we still have a few of our moms setting up the last items for tomorrow's big event. Thank you to everyone who helped organize Springfest. It seems like it is going to be amazing!
Thank you so much for all the wonderful accolades regarding Wizard of Oz. All the staff and students appreciate your support and appreciation. The students should be so proud of themselves.
Over the last week, I've attended a couple of conferences that were truly inspiring. The first was around a new way of creating grade 9 classes. Many American schools are starting to rearrange their grade 9 students into "homerooms" with less rotary and a strong team of teachers supporting them throughout the first year. These new models are being looked at seriously as a result of the decreasing and quite frankly, startling, decline in graduation rates. The unfortunate thing is that we are seeing similar data across TDSB. The conference also gave us some new "transition" strategies to look at with our feeder high schools.
The second conference was called "Boys Adrift" which focused on the growing issue of unmotivated and underachieving boys. Again, the high school and university graduation data of boys are following a disturbing pattern. According to Stats Canada, 68% of the university graduates in 1971 were boys, compared to 40% in 2006. The rest of the conference focused on the factors the speaker, Leonard Sax, says are the contributing factors; namely changes in education, video games, medications, endocrine disruptors and "revenge of the forsaken gods" or the collapse of our social constructions of masculinity. For obvious reasons, these issues are very real to many of you and us as educators. If you want to read more on the topic, we did buy a copy of Sax's book, Boys Adrift. If you want to borrow it, please come and see me.

Goodbye to February
I would like to start this blog by thanking our Class Safety Reps for the wonderful job they did on Monday and Tuesday as they served around 800 pancakes to the adults and students at LKS! Even though most of us never want to see another pancake for a very long time, it was truly a wonderful time spent together. Thank you to staff and parents who supplied us with some griddles and alternative snacks for those with allergies. It was nice that everyone was included in this experience. Next week, the reps will be looking at the Fairness Poems our students submitted to help recognize February's Character Trait of Fairness. The March Character Trait is "Honesty".
This week, our sports teams were really busy; namely hockey, swimming and badminton. We would like to extend our congratulations to both our hockey teams as they finished off their seasons on Thursday. Our juniors will be going to the semi-finals next week. What a big commitment that all the players put forth during the season. A special thanks to all the parents who drove the kids in the wee hours of the morning and at lunch. A special thanks also to Mr. Bracht and Mr. Page for your leadership both on and off the ice.
On Thursday, we also hosted many of our grade 8 and 9 teachers in our South West Family of Schools for a Grade 9 Math EQAO Workshop. Teachers were given an opportunity to look at last year's data and discussed the results together. These types of workshops will continue to be invaluable as we send our students on to the secondary schools.
Our students and staff had a great time at the Kiwanis Festival. On Friday, we took the last grade 8 group to John English and came in 2nd to Hollycrest. We really played well on stage and were an excellent audience. A special thank you to Ms. Armin and Mr. Samotowka.
A final note of recognition goes to our grade 8 students who attended the TDSB Skills Competition. This year, the groups had to create a carpark. A total of 44 teams competed across TDSB, and we are very proud to say that one of our LKS groups, consisting of Scott Mitchell, Kyle Wilson, Julia Dmytryshyn and Avery Wentraub, qualified for the Provincial competition in Waterloo in May. In addition, David Yang, Ian Tramble, Julia Tomczak and Julia Vescio will be our back-up team. Ben Pirie, Kenny Malcolmson, Jennifer Thompson, Khrystyna Hnatovska created our third team and need to be recognized at this time. Congratulations! Thank you Dr. deBraga for being so dedicated to our science program.
Finally, from Parent Council, a reminder to mark SPRINGFEST on your calendars-MAY 2, 2009! We are looking forward to a fun Saturday!

Week Ahead
Thank you to Mrs. Haslam and her committee for organizing Springfest this year. It was so much fun for the community, in spite of the rain!
A big thank you to all staff and students involved with our Free the Children Assembly and fundraiser. What a wonderful activity to be part of this year. The assembly was so moving and thoughtful.
Congratulations to our badminton teams. Although our grade 6 & 7 teams put forth a great effort yesterday, only our grade 8 teams will be moving on to the City Finals on the 13th.
Next week, we have a few soccer and frisbee games and track and field practises, so please check the phys.ed website for times and locations. We also hope our grade 5 classes have a great day at the Kortright Centre on the 15th. Furthermore, Mr. Blais, Mrs. Hill, Mr. Mclean and myself will be attending a student Equity Workshop with some of our grade 6 and 8 students on the 13th. We will share when we get back!
Finally, a big thank you to our grade 6 Peer Mediators who began their program this week. We are so happy to see you outside helping the little ones solve their problems! What a great help you are to all of us!
