This week our students participated in our first wellness activity as part of our Well-Being initiative. All the classes made a Positive Train. Each student wrote on a slip of paper something that they were grateful for or that they were good at. Each slip will be stapled together to form an LKS chain train. The lesson was a moment of reflection for students and staff. It gave us all an opportunity to think about and share what is important in our lives; something we should probably be doing more often.

Mrs. Norton and myself attended our first administrators meeting with members of TDSB senior team. We learned the focus of our School Improvement Plan will be in the areas of Equity, Student Achievement and Well Being. The Board has a new organizational model and there have been many changes and things are still evolving. We are part of Learning Center 4, Learning Network 27. Our superintendent is Tracy Hayhurst.

As the year progresses, we will share with you the work that we are doing in those areas.

Congratulations to our grade 3 and 6 students on their wonderful EQAO successes. The results in percentages are as follows in reading, writing and mathematics respectfully: 94, 92, 90 (grade 3) and 87, 90, 73. All scores are above Board and Provincial results. Individual results will be sent home when they are sent to the school in the next couple of weeks. Staff will analyze data to see the areas in which we can continue to improve upon.

The Board has also implemented a new Grade 3 Gifted Screening. All grade 3 students, with parental consent, will write the Canadian Abilities Test. Some will move on to the next phase depending upon their score.

Last year, I started to add useful links to educational websites on the LKS Website. I will continue to do that this year. Feel free to take a look throughout the year.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend.

We'd like to thank Mrs. McGee and the Parent Council Literacy Committee for another successful Book Fair. We love having Book Fairs as the students get so excited! The fairs are a great motivational tool.

Staff are finishing up completing our TDSB reading assessments with the students. The primary teachers use the Developmental Reading Assessment and the junior/intermediate staff implement the Canadian Assessment Strategies Interest. We will publish those results, along with the CTBS results in a couple of weeks. As a staff, we compare the Fall and Spring results to determine overall student growth. It gives us a "snapshot" of student achievement over the year.

We are also busy working on Long Range Plans for 2012/2013. As a staff, we had the opportunity to speak to the plans in grade teams (i.e. the kindergarten teachers collaborated with the grade one teachers).  This will allow consistency across the school and provide information to next year's teachers when programming for their students. We will also be completing our School Improvement Plan with the main focus being on professional development. The teachers will continue to collaborate in moderated marking sessions; math will be the focus first term, followed by language in second term.
Good luck to the grade 3 and 6 students as they complete EQAO next week!

Week Ahead

All the kids are back from Track & Field; looking a bit tired. It was an amazing day for the kids and staff. The kids had such a great time. Thanks to all the volunteers who helped today, especially the ECI students.

Thank you to all the families who came to our Kindergarten Spring Concert last night. It was a huge success. Thank you to all the staff and students who participated. Also, we had to postpone our Mediacs presentation on Tuesday as the speaker was caught in an accident on the way. We will reschedule for the Fall.

Congratulations to the Junior Boys Soccer team. They will be moving on to the semi-finals on Monday morning!

Next week EQAO starts for our students in grades 3-6. We thank the staff involved as they have worked hard to help prepare the kids for the assessment. We will receive our results in the Fall.

We hope the kindergarten students enjoy their trips this week!

Our staffing is almost complete and we will be sharing the information with you in the next couple of weeks. Please check our website under the 2008-2009 section. We have begun posting information for you. For example we just put in the Day Schedule, and we will post the School Year Calendar next week.
We hope everyone enjoys the weekend!

Earth Week

Thank you to Mr. Mclean, Mrs. Perry, Mrs. Cooper (Parent Council Environmental Rep), and the many parent volunteers for all their help organizing all the events that will take place next week. Our Kick-Off Assembly starts on Monday, followed by Green Day on Tuesday, the evening presentation on Wednesday, Litterless Lunch on Thursday and the final clean-up of the grounds on Friday. It should prove to be a great success. A special thank you goes out to the student Environmental Warriors! You've done a great job so far encouraging all of us to be more conscientious of our environment.

This week we met with the City and the Board to finalize plans for expanding our playground into the property next to the pool. The plan is to have the work complete for September. Also, the windows in Mr. Bracht's room are to be replaced with ones that open; we are hoping the work gets done sooner than later.

This week we had an entertaining play, Robin Hood, for the primary and grades 4-5 classes this week. Thank you to Parent Council for organizing this great event. We do love hosting performances for the kids as they allow another learning opportunity for storytelling.

Our grade 6 and 3 teachers having been working with our math consultant to help plan for EQAO. The students have been practising sample questions in preparation. The kids really get a chance to see where they can improve their skill level as they take the questions up together. If you would like more information on EQAO, please feel free to visit the Ministry website.
