Welcome February!

Once again, we'd like to thank all the children who have wanted to contribute to the people in Haiti. The students in the Seeds of Hope Club, will be hosting an assembly on February 18th. The day of the assembly, they are asking the children to bring in a small donation to their teacher to help contribute to Haiti. All donations will be given to both the Red Cross and Feed the Children.

Thank you to all the parents on the Parent Council Literacy Committee, who along side Mrs. McGee, our librarian, brought in a favourite author of the students, Cheryl Thorton. Mrs. Thorton helped us celebrate Family Literacy Day at LKS with her lively storytelling.

As many of you know, the two grade 8 classes have been separated into single-gender classes for the month of January. The grade 8 staff, myself included (being the art teacher), with the ongoing support of the parents, have really appreciated this past month as it has given us the opportunity to explore our instructional strategies and further develop our own professional development. Throughout our in-house action research project, we have gathered some data from staff, parents and the students. We are in the final stages of collection and will be ready to share our insights in the next couple of months to the grade 8 parents and at a parent council meeting.

The Character Trait for February is "Fairness". We will be discussing this in the classrooms and encourage you to do the same at home. Thank you.

Haiti Relief

Thank you to all the children for their wonderful ideas on how to help the people in Haiti. It is times like this when you see how kind and empathatic the students can be. Some of the classes and clubs will be organizing some low-key events to help raise funds for the relief effort over the next few months. All money will be donated to either Free the Children or Red Cross. Thank you for supporting their efforts.

Last Week of January!

Well, we are hard at work at LKS! Teachers will be completing final assessments over the next few weeks in order to start writing second term report cards. This term certainly has gone by quickly.

Just a reminder that Kindergarten Registration is scheduled for Feb 10th and 11th. We also found out that we will be "closed" to any optional attendance for September 2010. That means that no one can register at LKS unless they live in the boundaries. This has been the practice for many years.

Some of you may have heard that new legislation regarding safety in schools comes into effect on February 2010. Basically, Bill 157 requires all employees of the board to report any incidents to the Principal that could result in a suspension or expulsion, and parents of the victim must be informed. For many of us, these aren't new practices, it is now an amendment of the Education Act.

We'd like to take this time to thank you for supporting the many initiatives in our school. The funds raised through our Parent Council has gone to a variety of areas that contribute to the academic and social success of our students. Two such programs the kids really enjoy are the Scientist in the School and Artist in the School. As you can see below, most class visits have been arranged for the upcoming months. Please look for the kids'work in our hallways!

First Week Back!

Do you believe we only have approximately 7 weeks of school before the next report card goes home? For that reason, we will continue to keep focused on completing our curriculum units and keep the students fully engaged. Please remember that second term parent teacher interviews are reserved for students that present a concern to the teacher.

Kindergarten registration is on February 10th and 11th. Please call the school at 416-394-7890 after January 14th to book an appointment.

Family Literacy Day is on January 27th and LKS will be recognizing this day with a visit from Cheryl Thorton. Ms. Thorton will be sharing a variety of stories with the students. Thank you to Mrs. Taylor, a parent, and the Parent Council Literacy Committee for organizing the Olympic display in the front case.

Grade 8 Career Day!

The grade 8 classes at LKS will be attending a South West Career day on Feb 1st along with all the grade 8 students in the south west. The event will take place at Lakeshore Collegiate. It should prove to be a great day for the kids as they will have the opportunity to learn about different career options. Our guidance counsellors are organizing the day and are still looking for a few presenters. Most of the presenters are parents of the schools attending. If you would like to participate and are available on Feb 1st, please contact our guidance counsellor, Mrs. Forte( Rebecca.Forte@tdsb.on.ca ) for more information. Thank you for your support.
