Last Blog 2010

We hosted our graduation on Friday and it was beautiful. We are so proud of our graduates. We thanked the many grade 8 parents (and grade 7 parents) who were on the grad committee, but unfortunately we left out Mrs. Carbonaro. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Mrs. Carbonaro as she did an amazing job on the decorating committee!

I'd like to thank everyone for a great year at LKS. It has been a year of successes both in and outside the classroom. Your support at home is greatly appreciated and Mr. Lanis and I look forward to working with you again next year. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank our Parent Council Committe Chairs and the Executive of Corry, Sue, Kathy, Serena and Diane. You have done so much for the school this year-your dedication is to be admired. We are sorry to see Kathy move on as her children have graduated!

Although staffing continues to change, we have finalized most of our 2011 staff. As of now, the following staff will begin with us in September:

As you can see Mrs. Menis-Dias and Mrs. Grimwood-Wilson have joined the staff this year. Both teachers have come to us as they were both declared surplus from their schools (along with 150 Board employees). Both have experience in their divisions and bring some rich experiences to LKS. We welcome them both to the community. Also, we would like to thank Mrs. Sunde for her wonderful work with our grade 3 class. We wish her the best of luck next year. We also wish Mrs. Taylor best wishes as she will be leaving us for a year and returning in 2012. To Mrs. Street-we wish you all the best as you move to your next placement as an assistant. Your commitment to the students will be sadly missed.

The year calendar and day schedule have been available for quite some time now, but if you haven't had a chance to look at it, please see our website (on the sidebar). In early Fall, we will also post our School Improvement Summary and any final student achievement data/scores (i.e. EQAO).

The first day of School is September 6th. The school bell will ring at 8:45 a.m. As usual, we will all meet in the yard and line up behind our teacher before entry. If you are new to the school and haven't been assigned a teacher, please come to the office.

The office will be closed for the summer, but will reopen the last week of August for registration.

I do hope you have a great summer with your family and friends!

LKS Safety

Yesterday after school, a young boy was hit by a vehicle near the school. Thank you to all the people who were quick to react. The youngster will be okay, but did suffer some injury. This accident should remind all of us to please drive slowly and carefully around the school. As the warm weather is upon us, more students are riding their bikes and scooters, and may not always be aware of their surroundings. We will continue to remind the kids of street rules and please have these discussions at home too. Once again, thank you to all of those who assisted.

We had a very busy week with our sports teams. Congratulations to our junior boys and girls soccer teams, our track and field finalists, and our ultimate Frisbee and cricket teams. All of our teams made LKS proud for displaying excellent sportsmanship and skill; we will be recognizing your efforts at the Athletic Assembly next week. Thank you to Mr. Kuru, Ms. Walker, Mr. Bracht, Mrs. Hall, Mr. Ourique, and Mr. Ross for your commitment to coaching.

Thanks to all of the parents and families who attended our grade 3 pioneer open houses. What a wonderful opportunity to really see what the students have learned this term. It was an amazing culminating activity to solidify their skills and knowledge.

Our grade 3-8 students completed our spring CTBS. Overall they scored very well in reading, language and math; all grades have progressed from the fall. On Monday, we will post a letter on our website under DATA if you want specific information.

We hosted our volunteer tea yesterday, and it was nice seeing so many people. Our staff would like to thank all of our volunteers for your interest and support. We would not be LKS without you. If you did not receive your token of appreciation, please make sure you pick it up on Mrs. Sheppard's desk. Thanks to Mrs. Dacyshyn, Mrs. Younger, Mrs. Seitz and Mrs. Heath for organizing our celebration.

Have a wonderful weekend celebrating Father's Day!

June 10, 2011

We'd like to welcome back our grade 8 students from Quebec. They should be arriving in the next few hours. We heard through the grapevine they had a great time! As many of you can recall, this will be something they will always remember. I really want to thank Mr. Ellerker and Ms. Chandra for being instrumental in the organization, along with Mr. Kuru, Ms. Hoffman, Ms. Dacyshyn and Ms. Bell (an assistant) for supervising the trip. Thank you for supporting the students; we know this trip takes you from your family and responsibilities for a week.

We are looking forward to our grade 8 Graduation on the 24th and celebrating with our families and friends.

I also want to extend an apology and thank you to Mr. Samotowka and Mr. Goldberg for their commitment to our music program and our concerts. I neglected to thank them along with the rest of the staff last week; I thought I thanked them the week before. I apologize. The students certainly wouldn't be where they are in their playing if it wasn't for you.

This week, our grade 6 and 7 students had two presentations on Internet safety and beauty myths respectively. Both were great presentations as they focused on the the good things the wild, wild web has to offer, along with the negative aspects of it. Please ask your child about the presentations and continue to follow up at home with these discussions. Next year, the staff Safety Committee and student safety reps are going to continue focusing on these themes. They may be planning some kind of powering down campaign-maybe a 24 hour social network fast!

Again, I'd like to thank Mrs. Laco for organizing our Pizza Lunches. Our last one will be on the last day of school when we have Lunch on the Lawn. Today, Mr. Kuru's class helped out and they were terrific leaders. Mrs. Laco is to be commended as it takes a lot of time and preplanning to feed approximately 500 students. Thank you to our grade parents for organizing our parent volunteers.

Congratulations to our Senior Girls Soccer team for placing second in the City Finals. As you can see from the dates below, we have a busy upcoming week with more finals. Congratulations to our athletes for your perseverance and dedication. We will be celebrating all of our teams (and house league participants) at the year end Athletic Assembly in two weeks.

Finally, report cards do go home on the 27th. We will be busy making final assessments and evaluations over the next two weeks. Please remember to take a look at the Promotion, Transfer and Retention Procedures on our website. As many of you know, we do have a high rate of promotion at the school, but it is important to know what the PTR says. If there were areas of concerns, teachers and parents would have been in discussions throughout the term. If you have questions regarding this, please speak to your homeroom or rotary teacher (junior and intermediate). The website also has the 2011-2012 day schedule and year calendar.

I hope you have a great weekend. We look forward to seeing you at Parent Council on Monday to discuss the budget and the Volunteer Tea on Thursday.

June 3, 2010

I'd like to thank you for supporting our music programs at LKS. We had our Middle School concert on Wednesday and our Primary/Junior on Thursday. Both nights gave the students an opportunity to showcase their talents for us. What a great night of entertainment. Music plays such an important part in our lives and it is live and well at LKS! Once again, thank you to Ms. Hoffman for playing a lead in the organization and Ms. McGee for the hours spent rehearsing. An additional thanks to Mrs. Adair for helping with choir and Mr. Littlejohn for hosting our guitar club this year.

Our grade 3 and 6 students finished EQAO this week. We will look for the results in the Fall.

We hope our grade 8 students have a great time in Quebec next week.
