Safety Warning

Just to let you know, some schools nearby have received notice by the police asking that they be contacted if they notice a man around his fifties who is driving a light-coloured beige car beginning with "A" on the license plate. Please remind your children, as we will, of the things they can do and not do if approached by stranger. Please call 22 Division if you have further information.

April 1, 2010

On Monday, we started our week with our monthly Sharing Assembly to honour the character trait of honesty. We had some good discussions about what honesty is and why it is sometimes hard to be honest. It was very interesting to hear the different perspectives from the varying ages across the school. The overall message was that no matter the circumstance, the kids will always be loved and cared for, and that it is better to tell the truth.

The grade 8 students are selling some beautiful jewellery to help support their Quebec trip. This is a wonderful leadership experience and it has been nice seeing the kids take ownership of their fundraising. It has been well organized and received. Thanks to Mrs. Snelling and all the students involved. Congratulations on a job well done.

This week, many of our teachers participated in an IPhoto workshop to learn more about the program and what it can do for them in their classroom. We are looking forward to seeing how those skills will transfer to their program and the students' learning. As many of you know, this is a major focus for our school and professional development.

Recently, Trustee Gough was elected for Ward 3. She has written a newsletter that we have attached to our website.

Thank you to Mrs. Gibson for organizing our Terry Fox Assembly. We had a special time together celebrating our success of raising over $22, 000 (the 7th top school). Russell actually won a bicycle from the foundation; only two in Canada were given out! In addition, Mr. Bracht and Mr. Ross are now bald; we raised an additional $150 as the students all bought tickets to be the barbers!

I trust you all had a relaxing break and are back into the daily routines of life again.

I'd like to thank Mr. Bracht for organizing our Athletic Assembly on Thursday afternoon. We tried a different format this year as the team members spoke about their teams from first term. It was really inspiring to hear the students' speak about their experiences. It is important to recognize the students' successes, and how "fair play" and "having fun" should be focus; not just the number of banners we have on the gym walls. Congratulations to all the students who participated on our sports teams or in our houseleague program. Once again, thank you to the coaches and parents who volunteered their time to ensure extra-curricular activities happen at LKS!

Thank you to Mrs. Kidd and her committees for organizing Springfest. Please take note of the notices coming your way over the next few weeks in preparation for this very special event in the community.

March Break

Congratulations to all the members of the Junior Hockey Team for their victory at the City Champions this week. The team delivered a wonderful performance for the grade 4-8 students and staff on Thursday. You made LKS very proud of you!

Some of you have asked if the school year calendar has been published for 2011-2012. The board has submitted a calendar for the Ministry to approve. After approval, the calendar will be published sometime in early May. Thanks.

I hope everyone has a great March Break. Enjoy your family and friends where ever you are!

March 7-11

Thank you to all the students who showed great talent and LKS effort during all their sporting events this week. Thank you to Mr. Ross, Ms. Moser, Mr. Littlejohn, Mr. Kuru, Mr. Bracht and Mr. Lanis for coaching our Girls' Volleyball, Boys' Basketball and co-ed Hockey Teams. Our Junior Hockey team will be advancing on to a semi-conference game on Monday.

As some of you might know, one of our staff school-wide initiatives this year is to increase our awareness and skill in the area of technology. At a recent staff meeting, Ms. Moser and Ms. Kim demonstrated what they have been doing in this area in the classroom. Ms. Moser introduced us to "avatars" and the world of comics! It really is a great strategy that we can use to continue to motivate our students. Some teachers were so excited, they already began using them this week in class. Don't be surprised if you see your child creating little avatars of themselves!

A couple of weeks back I attended a Learning and Brain Conference. The focus was how the digital age is altering student brains, learning and teaching of the IGeneration. One article of interest was on how the family can support youth become new media producers; particularly the importance of parents in that process. If you are interested in reading the article (it's a bit "researchy"), please see me!

This week, our grade 3 and 6 teachers met to discuss EQAO planning. If you are a grade 3 or 6 parent, and would like to know a little more about EQAO, please feel free to attend our parent information night on April 11th at 6:00 p.m. before the Parent Council meeting. Although this night is mainly for grade 3 parents, any grade 6 parents wanting a refresher are welcome.

Finally, Sunnylea Summer Program Pamphlets will be available in the office after April 18th.
