First Week of May!

Today we reminded the children of appropriate dress wear during the next couple months of warm weather. We are strongly encouraging the following:

-no hats including any headgear (i.e. bandanna)
-tops need to cover bra straps
-pants need to cover undergarments
-skirts, shorts and dresses need to be just above the knee
-no inappropriate sayings or images on T-shirts

Please reiterate the importance of dressing appropriately, especially with any children in the older grades. We thank you in advance.

We hope to see all the volunteers at the Volunteer Tea on May 20th. If you have volunteered in the class, for a club, drove for a sports team etc, we would really like to see you there to thank you, in our small way, for all that you do to help us out.

If you are around the school on Tuesday, May 4th, please visit the grade 8 photography exhibition in the gym. The grade 8 classes, Mr. Blais' class and Mrs. Taylor's class under the direction of Mr. Elias have taken some beautiful shots of the environment and they will be on display between 8:15 and 4:30. You will also have an opportunity to vote for the top grade 8 piece to be displayed at the AGO in the Contact Photography Exhibition on May 14th.

April Events

We had a very interesting week at LKS beginning with our long awaited production of Beauty and the Beast. We congratulate all those involved including the students, staff and parent volunteers. It was so entertaining and the kids had such a great time. Thank you for supporting this very large endeavor.

Springfest is Going GREEN!!
-------------------------------------

Be sure to keep Saturday May 15th free from 10am-2pm for the annual LKS Springfest Celebration. In keeping with our eco-theme, Springfest is going green....we're aiming for less packaging, less waste, and more fun for everyone!

The Silent Auction will publish all items (including pictures!!) on an online blog instead of sending out the paper catalogue. Stay tuned for the blog address in the next few weeks.....

The ever-popular Tombola game will still be the same, we're just adding some new twists! Instead of buying all those tombola's, we are asking parents to instead purchase one or more $5 tombola leaves. Each classroom will display their leaves on a tree and the class with the most leaves will still win the traditional pizza lunch. Half of the money collected will go directly to the school, and the other half will help buy grand prizes for the game. Remember to bring your own coffee mug and tote bag to carry all your goodies, and please use the recycling bins on site.

Stay tuned for more info coming your way soon! Questions? Contact:

Dj.greifenberger@sympatico.ca for Springfest, and jilltyndall@gmail.com for Tombola.

Finally, as some of you may know already, some of our families in the community have suffered losses recently as close family members have passed away. Yesterday we attended a funeral for the mother of one of our students. It is during these times we really do have to lean on each other and be as supportive as we can. Our thoughts continue to be with our families who are in similar situations currently.

We are looking forward to all the earth celebrations next week. Once again our Eco Committee has done a fabulous job of bringing in activities for the kids to continue to bring awareness and education to the school community. Please look for their calendar of activities on our website.

Looking forward to seeing you at the LKS Fundraising Gala on Saturday night.

Safety

Today we were able to practise our safety procedures with the children as a result of someone not wearing an identification badge. It was a good reminder again, for all staff and parents of the importance of wearing an identification badge. A reminder again to all parents to please sign in at the office and to wear a visitor's badge. Do not go into the school without coming to the office first. We thank you in advance.

Safety

Today, a man used our boy's washroom without announcing himself to the office; he came in through the southeast doors as kids were coming in and out of the doors. He was a construction worker working on a house around the corner. Mr. Lanis and myself went to the house to confirm his story and to reiterate the consequences of his actions. We initially found out about the incident as two of our grade 5 boys saw him and told the office. The boys are to be commended for knowing what to do and we are so proud of them. We've discussed this as a staff and reviewed our safety procedures. We would also like to remind all visitors to report to the office, sign in and wear our visitors badge. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Interactive Voice Mail

In order to improve our communication with the community, we have signed up for a new voice mail system that will call home for community announcements and attendance. It is very similar to the system that most high schools use. Currently, we are set up only for the community announcements. We will use this system sparingly (i.e fire/smoke at the school, bomb threats etc) as we do not want you to get tired of us! We are practising tonight with an announcement about the upcoming LKS Fundraiser Gala. The system should be calling between 5:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. Please listen to the entire message before hanging up or you may get another call. If there is a glitch, please call the school at 394-7890 and tell the office. Thank you for the support.

April Snow?

April Showers? April Snow? What a crazy week of weather. Hopefully this weekend will be nice so we can get outside.

It was another busy week for our grade 5 and 7 Badminton teams as both had tournaments. Some players will be moving on to the next round. We also wish our Swim team luck at their meet next week.

This week some of our grade 8 students organized a wonderful staff lunch that featured food from around the world. We had such a good time and great food. The kids raised a little over $200 for Haiti. I love to see the students take on these leadership roles.

Good luck to all the students who will be participating in the musical next week. They have put in so many hours of rehearsals over the last few months. We hope to see you out next week!
