First Week of June!

It's a very busy time of year for the students as many are finishing up projects and assignments. Our grade 3 to 8 students have just completed the Spring Canadian Test of Basic Skills (CTBS) and our grade 3 & 6 students will be completing the EQAO assessment next week. Our staff will use the results as informal assessment tools for further programming and evaluation.

Just a reminder that the Character Trait for June is 'Perseverance'. We just celebrated 'Integrity' at this week's Sharing Assemblies. This is a hard concept to understand, especially for the little ones, but can be described by choosing to do the right thing. We also told the kids that it is alright to make mistakes, but the important thing is to learn from them for the future.

Please visit our website to download the Day Schedule and Year Calendar fro 2010/2011.

I got a call from Parks and Rec to remind the parents in the community that the pool will be under renovations this summer.

Thank You!

Thank you to all of the parents, students and staff who helped out with Springfest. It was a great day for the children and adults! Springfest is a long-standing tradition and it is important to continue having these community building activities. I really do feel privledged to be part of this day at LKS! Thank you to the members of Parent Council who have worked for months on organizing the day.

Also, thank you to all the parents who came to the Volunteer Tea on Thursday after school. The treats and punch are just a small token of our appreciation for all that you do for the students and teachers at the school. We wouldn't be LKS without you!

Just a reminder that if your child has chicken-pox or lice to please contact the school. Once we know, we send home a general letter informing parents.

We practised our first of three Spring fire drills today. The students are very mindful of the importance of these practices.

The Village of Islington is hosting their "Paint the Street!" festival to be held in Michael Power Park on Saturday June 5, 2010, noon to 5 pm.

I hope you all have a great long-weekend.

Happy Springfest!

We hope everyone has a great day on Saturday at Springfest...we hope it is sunny and warm! A big thank you to all the parents on the organizing committee as it takes an enormous amount of time to organize this big event.

Recently, we have had a few more cases of lice. If your child contacts lice, please inform the school as we normally send home a generic letter from Public Health. Please make sure you shampoo (use the lice shampoo), comb out the hair using a "nit" comb and then pick out all the nits. Your child can return to school once all the nits are picked out.I sympathize with all the families who have been affected-my family has gone through it before and it is a lot of work!

In addition, if your child is experiencing any flu-like symptoms (i.e. throwing up), please keep them home for 24 hours (the advice from Public Health) and take them to the doctor if you deem necessary. Please call the school if your child will be away.

If you haven't done so already, please take some time to complete the parent survey from the Director of Education, Chris Spence. The survey can be located at www.tdsb.on.ca/parentsurvey.

Do you like to run...try out the Etobicoke Track and Field Club at www.etobicoketrack.ca/sportscamp-a few of our LKS students have joined in the past and have had some good experiences with the club.

Thank you for coming to the school on Tuesday to support the Photography Exhibition. The grade 8 students including Bella, Maddie, Morganna, Teighan, Katie, Emily, Scott, Christian, Cam, Georgia, Sammy and David should be very proud of the work they did to put on such a great show. Congratulations to all of our budding photographers in Mr. Blais' class, Mrs. Taylor's class and the two grade 8 classes. A special congratulations goes to the top six photographers in grade 8; Bella, Cam, Lucas, Maddie, Morganna and Christian. The grade 5-8 students and adults voted on these six for their favourite photo. Congratulations to the top three students including Lucas (waterfall), Cam (bird on beach) and Bella (flower); their photos will be displayed at the Contact Exhibition at the AGO from May 14th - May30th.

Check out the LKS Springfest Silent Auction Blog! Remember we're an Eco-School--there will be no hard copy catalogue going home this year. The blog will be updated as new items arrive.....so check back often to see the latest items!
