What an exciting day yesterday! We hosted two kindergarten Sharing Assemblies and played three football games. To say the least, it was busy. Congratulations to all the students who played ball; you made LKS very proud. Good luck to the Junior team as they continue on next Tuesday. Thank you Mr. Bracht as you carried on without your coaching partner, Mr. Kuru.

On Tuesday, we had our Sharing Assemblies for the primary, junior and intermediate students. Elizabeth, Matthew and Trudy hosted our junior/intermediate assembly that focused on the character trait of "Responsibility" and they did a fabulous job; they are naturals in front of an audience. The intermediate students will continue to host as it provides great leadership opportunities.

We are really looking forward to our Parade on Monday. We are hoping many of you come out to celebrate our little ones in costume. We'd like to go around the new track, so please line the field when you are waiting for us. The grade 8 students will once again, be hosting their annual haunted house (not too scary for the little ones). All funds ($2 entry) raised will go to the end of the year graduation trip to Quebec. We know the kids are going to get lots of candy over the next couple of days (a downfall to dieting staff members), so please remember that we are a "nut-safe" school!

This week, our new SmartBoard arrived, along with a class set of "clickers". The clickers will allow teachers to set a test on the SmartBoard and the students can answer using their "clickers". These devices are going to prove very valuable to teachers as they will provide instant "feedback" for the teacher. Once we get trained on them, we will demonstrate their use at a Parent Council meeting. We want to again thank you, the community, and Parent Council for providing these funds. We have almost purchased all the items allocated from the Parent Council: namely the Smart Clickers, 3 document cameras, projectors and carts, a SmartBoard, the Grade 6 Music Camp, and junior anthologies that teachers use in their language programs. A cello will be purchased shortly. All resources are greatly appreciated by staff and students.

In closing, congratulations to Mr. Kuru and his family as they welcome their new baby boy home.

October 21, 2011

Last Saturday, our grade 6 classes participated in an Instrumental Music Camp organized by Michael Samotowka and subsidized by community funds through Parent Council. The day was spectacular as the students had a day full of instruction on their instrument from professionals in the industry. Mid-day the students were treated to some pizza and had a recreational break. After their afternoon instruction, they, along with parents, were treated to a short performance by their instructors and the students. Mr. Goldberg, our strings teacher taught a small group also. Mr. Samotowka should be commended for bringing forth such a great idea as the experience for the students was outstanding. We've had many positive comments from our grade 6 parents already. Thank you to Ms. Greifenberger, Ms. Burdon, Ms. Lawson, Ms. Kranias, Ms. Syptak, Ms. McNeely and Mr. Virani who helped organize the pizza and details.

I'd also like to thank Mrs. Miller, Mrs. Young and members of the Parent Council Education Committee for organizing our Anaylphylatic Day again. The kids really enjoyed the performance by Kyle Dine as he informed us, through song and dance, about food allergies. Posters have been placed around the school reminding kids to be a PAL (Protect a Life) to their peers who have allergies. In class presentations, students were reminded about what to do in the event of an allergic reaction and further instruction on how to use an epi-pen took place; their favourite part! Our dedicated parents will be back next week for our grade 5-8 Sharing Assemblies. I'd also like to thank Loblaws (Humbertown & Humbercrest) for donating our safe snacks!

We had our second Parent Council Meeting on Monday; the first for the new Executive consisting of Mrs. Laco, Mrs. Townsend, Mrs. Haslam, Mrs. Hinckley, and Mrs. Miller. Each sub-committee was given the opportunity to update us on their committee work and Grace, our grade 8 student rep talked about her role on the grade 6-8 student council and Seeds of Hope. Thank you to Mrs. McGee who gave her staff report and Mr. Lanis for making a presentation on our EQAO and other data that we use at LKS to inform our practices. I was given some time to remind parents to use our new on-line booking procedures for booking Parent/Teacher Interviews (please see Grade Parent email this week again). Also, our kindergarten teachers will be sending home an Early Literacy Survey to our kindergarten parents to help us continue to better program for our little ones and to provide a starting point for a workshop that we would like to present to parents on best practices for teaching your child to read and write at home. We are really looking forward to this project. All Parent Council minutes should be on our website.

Finally, this week I had a few chats with some children in our younger classes as they were struggling with some pretty common issues around "friendships". I thought I would send you this link that might be useful to you if your child is of similar age and dealing with some social "concerns". The article gives strategies that parents can use when discussing positive and negative aspects of friendships at this age: http://childparenting.about.com/od/socialdevelopment/a/makefriends.htm

Congratulations to all of our students who attended the Cross Country West Meet on Tuesday. You made LKS proud. We wish the best of luck to our youngsters moving on to the City Finals on the 20th!

Also, congratulations to our girls' and boys' softball teams as they too will be moving on to the next round of play. I was able to see the boys play on Thursday and it was exciting ball to watch! Thank you to Mr. Littlejohn, Ms. Moser, Mr. Ross and Mrs. Shklar for coaching this year.

As mentioned last week, parents will be invited to book an interview with your teacher using our on-line system this year. Please read this week's Grade Parent email as you will need our school code to book.

We are looking forward to hosting our first Grade 6 Instrumental Music Camp on Saturday. The students in attendance will be receiving small group instruction which should "kick start" their skills this year. A big thank you to Mr. Samotowka for organizing this event. See you on Saturday.

October 7, 2011

I'd like to thank Mrs. Wilson, Mr. Bracht and Mr. Ellerker for helping at our Cross Country Meet on Tuesday. We took around 130 students from grades 1-8. We are very proud of all of our students, especially our new grade ones, who have come to early morning practices; even in the rain! The races were fast and long and it was evident our students really tried their best. We have quite a few going on to our West Finals on the 11th. Good Luck! Also, I'd like to thank Mr. Ross and Mr. Littlejohn for coaching our Junior Boys' Softball team on Thursday. The kids played great. Again, thank you to all of our parents who drove our teams.

I'd like to also thank our parents who have volunteered their time this year to be part of our Parent Council Executive: Mrs. Laco and Ms. Townsend (Co-Chairs), Mrs. Kress (Vice), Mrs. Haslam (Treasurer), Mrs. Hinckley (Secretary) and Mrs. Miller (Grade Parent Rep). Our next PC meeting is on October 17th @ 7:30.

We still have a few weeks until we start writing our mid-term Ministry Progress Reports; the same reports that were first implemented last year. The report cards will be sent home on November 14th. The same week, teachers will be setting up teacher-parent interviews. This year, we will be moving to an on-line booking format instead of sending home paper. Many secondary schools use this process and our intermediate team used one last February with much success. This year, all parents will have the opportunity to book their interviews on-line. We are looking forward to this process as it is much more efficient. We will be sending out detailed information about this process shortly.

I wish everyone a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend!
