Congratulations to all of our grade 6-8 students who wrote the math contest this week. We should get the results shortly. I'd like to thank Mrs. Heath for organizing the contest this year.

During our Athletic Assembly on Wednesday, the Heart and Stroke Foundation presented their Jump Rope for Heart campaign which will take place on March 5th. Your child received an information and pledge package. Last week the students also participated in class presentations about heart disease and keeping healthy. Thank you to Mrs. Laco, Ms. Kim and Mr. Bracht for organizing this event.

I really want to thank Mrs. Raymond, Mr. Blais, Mrs. Tyndall and Mrs. Macpherson for working together with me to present our parent information night this week on "Early Years Reading Strategies". We showed a variety of strategies that can be used when reading with children. If you weren't able to make the evening, please feel free to check out www.edu.gov.on.ca/eng/literacynumeracy/parentGuideLit.pdf AND/OR www.starfall.com for additional resources.

We hope the grade 6 to 8 classes have fun skiing tomorrow.

Congratulations to our Senior Boys' Basketball team and Senior and Junior Girls' Volleyball teams as all participated in tournaments this week. All of the students played well this week and should be proud of their efforts. Thank you to Mr. Littlejohn, Ms. Moser, Ms. Sunde, Mr. Kuru, Mr. Bracht and Mr. Ross for coaching.

I'd also like to thank Ms. Walker for being the staff advisor to our craft club this year. The kids really enjoyed this lunch-time club.

I'd like to congratulate the students on a great first term. They should be proud of their accomplishments. Our junior and intermediate students are encouraged to take some time to begin setting their second term goals. The teachers are completing their short range goals and are focusing on a moderated marking session this term. This is valuable professional development as it provides an opportunity to assess student work using common rubrics with colleagues.

We received our preliminary projected enrolment numbers for next year, and we are projected to have 641 students in September. This number has decreased over the years; we did start with 671 in 2007. As many of you know, this is the number the board uses for staffing and the ministry uses for funding.

We are looking forward to seeing our kindergarten parents at our "Early Reading Strategies" session on Wednesday night @ 6:30 p.m. in the library.

I hope you have a wonderful long weekend with your family and friends.

Congratulations to our grade 8 students as some have received acceptance into specialized programs next year! This is a hard time of the year for some of our students as they continue to wait to hear from potential schools. It can be very stressful if they don't get into a program of choice, and we've had some discussions about how to deal with these emotions.

We are looking forward to seeing many of you this week for interviews. The students will be bringing home report cards on Monday. We are very proud of the students' achievements this term. They should be very proud of their accomplishments.

Have a nice weekend!

February 3, 2012

It was good to see January behind us this week. It seemed like a long month of darkness and no snow. Hopefully we will have plenty of snow for this month's grade 6-8 ski trip.

This week, we hosted our Sharing Assemblies and recognized our character trait of teamwork. I would like to thank Mary, Rand, and the senior guitar club for their performances. During the grade 7 -8 assembly we also discussed the TDSB Promotion, Transfer and Retention policy. It's really important that the senior students in particular understand how this policy on achievement affects their schooling and more importantly how their choices directly impact their grades. In the next little while, we will also be sharing the awards that will be presented at graduation this year. Hopefully, this will continue to help the students work towards a bigger goal. We feel it is really important to continue to recognize student achievement. A list of awards can be found on our website under "Student Achievement Awards".

Just a reminder that our on-line booking system for parent/teacher interviews will be available to you next week. Please see the grade parent note that was sent to you last week and this week. You will need the code to enter. Please remember to book an appointment only if there is a concern this term. First term interviews are scheduled to touch base with everyone, whereas second term appointments are generally made if there is a concern. We thank you in advance.

Finally, I would like to thank Ms. Moser and our ECO-Warriors as they attended an ECO-Conference on Wednesday. The students had the opportunity to share all the great initiatives we are doing at the school and gathered ideas from other schools. I would also like to thank Mrs. Forte, our guidance counselor, for taking some of our grade 8 students to the Dare to Dream Conference.

I hope everyone has a great weekend.
