End of Week-February 1, 2013

I cannot believe February is here! January is so busy at the school as students are finishing up projects and staff are writing and reading final report cards. Please refer to your weekly grade parent letter for interview information.

Next week, the grade 8 students will continue to sell "Candy Grams" for Valentine's Day. Each gram is $1. All proceeds will go towards the end of year Quebec trip.

As a staff, we continue with our SmartBoard Training next week. It's great that we have more staff learning how to use this teaching tool!

I'd like to thank Jessica and Jenna for organizing the follow event for the school:

"Teens for Jeans" is an organization sponsored by AĆ©ropostale and dosomething.org. It is a charity that collects gently used jeans and gives them to homeless shelters. Bring in your old jeans to the school between January 21st and February 4th in front of the office. If we donate 500 pairs of jeans, we are eligible for $10, 000. LKS...remember that we can make a difference!

Currently, our staff is focusing on final assessments and evaluations in order to complete report cards.  January 25th is a designated Professional Activity Day for teachers to work on these items individually or with colleagues. There will be no school.

We are also focusing on providing staff with training opportunities to use our existing Smart Boards. Currently, we have 14 boards in the classrooms. Our intention over the next few years is to have one in each class. They are a wonderful teaching and learning tool.

Friday, January 11, 2012

Well, we were off to a great start with the children getting right down to work in the classrooms. I always find the kids are ready to come back after the two week holiday. Unfortunately, there will be no school or transportation on Friday due to a teacher protest.

As we start the New Year, I do want to remind everyone of the procedures we ask you to follow when coming to the school. As most of you know, we require all visitors to come to the office when entering the building, to sign in and acquire a visitors badge.  We ask that you do not come into the school before the bell rings for security reasons. All children should wait outside in line with their friends until their teacher picks them up.  If you haven't had the opportunity to read the Parent Handbook, please visit our website and look for it under the Parent tab. We thank you in advance.

I'd also like to remind everyone that LKS is a nut-safe environment. We ask that you do not send in products that contain nuts, especially into the lunchroom and/or a classroom where there may be a student that can have an anaphylactic reaction.  It is important that all children feel safe coming to school, and we ask the co-operation of the school community in this manner. Other things that may assist in the prevention of a reaction is to have your children wash their hands and teeth if consuming peanuts/nuts before coming to school, bringing in other items like, pencils or stickers, instead of food to celebrate birthdays, teach your children to read labels at the grocery store, talk to your children about avoiding sharing food, and refraining from teasing or bullying a student with a food allergy. Generally, our student body is respectful and supportive of one another, and they should be commended for their efforts in this area. But, it is important that these procedures and policies be followed at all times. You can look on our website, under the Anaphylaxis tab, for a letter to our kindergarten parents regarding snacks and a list of peanut/nut-free treats.

This week, I've asked the teachers to make contact with parents if they have a concern about academic and/or social progress. It is imperative there are no surprises for anyone when the report cards come home on February 11th. Parent/Teacher interviews in November is an opportunity for teachers to meet all parents of their students, but interviews in Feb are usually reserved for teachers and parents to discuss concerns, but any parent can request an interview.

I hope you have a good weekend.

As many of you know, it has been published in the media that the teachers will be protesting on Friday. When we get official news from TDSB, we will send out a grade parent letter immediately.
