September 28, 2011

A big thank you to Mrs. Gibson and Mrs. Heathe for organizing our Terry Fox Walk this year. We will get our official donation amount shortly. The students have really enjoyed the incentives this week; including "Super Hero" day today! I'd also like to thank Mrs. Taylor, Mrs. Miller and Ms. Wardrop for helping with all the paperwork.

I'd also like to thank Mrs. Adiar, Mrs. Olson and Mrs. Zappi for attending the "Me to We" event on Tuesday with some of our intermediate students. The students really enjoyed the day hearing about the good things that are happening with Free the Children and are inspired to begin good work with our very own Seeds of Hope Club!

On Thursday, Ms. Moser, Ms. Shklar, Mr. Lanis and Mrs. Morrison attended a staff Eco-Conference where they reviewed our existing goals and preplanned for this year's club.

Today, we hosted our first Sharing Assembly for the grade 1-8 students. Some students were recognized from their teachers and peers for demonstrating "Respect". I found a good website for other suggestions that you can use at home: http://www.teachkidshow.com/teach-your-child-to-take-responsibility/.

It's been a terrific month of learning at LKS. Teacher's have been very busy completing both informal and formal assessments in order to help set up programming based on our students' needs. This week, staff also had the opportunity to work in grade teams to begin analyzing some of our data to help create goals for our School Improvement Plan for the term. As work is completed, all information will be shared at Parent Council nights and on the the website.

I hope you have a wonderful weekend. It's getting cold out there!

Terry Fox

We are so looking forward to our annual Terry Fox Walk tomorrow. We really hope you can join us as it is a great community event! TVO will be here to speak to Mrs. Gibson and some of her student helpers. It should at 4:20 and again at 4:55 pm on Wednesday.

Friday, September 23, 2011

It's official. Fall is here!

Thank you for attending our annual fall Curriculum Night. We hope that you found your evening enjoyable and informative. Again, teacher long range plans will be posted on our website in the next week.

Thank you for donating to our Terry Fox Walk that will take place on Wednesday. The students have collected $5000 so far, with the goal of $25, 000. We invite you to attend our walk in the afternoon.

Finally, our playground should be completed late next week or early the following week. It will be great to get full use of the fields again!

September 16, 2011

Once again, it's been a wonderful week at LKS. The weather has been terrific and the students are enjoying the last bit of warm weather.

We hope to see you next Thursday for Curriculum Night. Times should be posted on teacher blogs/emails or websites and there is a schedule under "Notices" on the website. Please come to meet the LKS staff and be introduced (or reintroduced) to the year's curriculum.

Over the next two weeks, the students will be busy collecting for our annual Terry Fox Run and Seeds of Hope; two very important initiatives in the school that remind us of the importance of giving back to the community (local and international). On our website, you will also find a letter under "Notices" from the TDSB sharing information on the "Disaster Relief in East Africa". Our thoughts go out to our families in the community who have been affected by these events also.

First Week

It's been a busy first week as we had to reorganize a few classes in order to meet the ministry caps. The three/four split is now a straight three. We are still over cap in one of our afternoon kindergarten classes. We will be working with the Board to see how to manage that scenario next week.

Just a reminder to please make sure you get your September Form back as we will begin organizing our information next week. Also, please make sure you get your "medical forms" for conditions that we need to look at (i.e. anaphylaxis), into the office as soon as possible. It is important that we receive that information as we make an up-to-date binder that is distributed to all staff. If you are interested in receiving a free medical alert bracelet, contact the office for a brochure provided by the Canadian MedicAlert Foundation. (P.S. Some of the dates on the original form were wrong. I apologize. See below for the correct dates)

Request for Grade Parents
We currently have many of the Grade Parent positions filled, however, we do have MANY GAPS. If you can help with this rewarding experience, please contact Karen Miller at karen.p.miller@rogers.com.

For those new to Lambton Kingway a Grade Parent helps organize class and school events. Helping with these tasks enriches the students' learning experience by allowing teachers to focus on their students instead of administrative tasks. Activities generally include:

- distributing the class contact list upon permission from the parents and teacher;
- recruiting volunteers for activities according to the teacher's needs;
- recruiting volunteers for Parent Council fundraising activities or LKS functions;
- informing class parents of upcoming LKS and classroom events via email.

Classrooms requiring Grade Parents are:

Kindergarten
- Mr. Blais (am) - 2 parents required
- Mrs. Tyndall (am) - 2 parents required
- Mrs. Tyndall (pm) - 2 parents required
- Ms. Raymond (am ) - 1 parent required
- Ms. Raymond (pm) - 1 parent required

Grade 1
- Mrs. Younger - 2 parents required

Grade 1/2
- Mrs. Hall - 2 parents required
- Mrs. Mandel - 1 parent required

Grade 2
- Mrs. Seitz - 1 parent required

Grade 2/3
- Ms Shklar - 1 parent required

Grade 3
- Mrs. Bradshaw - 2 parents required

Grade 4
- Mr. Littlejohn - 1 parent required
- Ms. Kim - 2 parents required

Grade 5
- Ms. Iafrate - 1 parent required
- Mrs. Young - 2 parents required

Grade 6
- Mr. Ourique - 2 parents required

Grade 7
- Mr. Kuru - 1 parent required

Grade 8
- Mr. Ellerker - 2 parents required
- Ms. Chandra - 1 parent required

The students are really enjoying the new turf and we've even had a few football practices on it. We are monitoring how the kids are playing, as you can imagine, all the kids want to either sit or play on it, all at once. We want everyone to be safe and have a chance, so we'll keep an eye out next week. We don't want to begin structuring "free time", but we may have to designate days. We'll keep experimenting.

We are very proud of all our grade 3 and 6 students who wrote the EQAO assessment in June. Preliminary results show 90% of our grade three students were at Level 3 and 4 in reading, 91% in writing and 90% in math. Our grade six students scored levels of 90% in reading, 89% in writing and 81% in math. Once the official results are in next week, the staff will look at those, along with our other data (i.e. report card, CTBS, fall reading assessments etc) to set our teaching goals for the year. Individual scores for the grade 3 and 6 students will be sent home after we receive them shortly. Please see our website for future data in achievement.

Finally, September 11th is on Sunday and our thoughts are with the families who have been affected by this tragedy.

Education Day

Education Day is on September 20, 2011. The following letter has been written to the communities on behalf of the Board:

September 6, 2011
Dear Parent/Guardian/Community Member,
What your child is learning, how your local school operates, and what resources are spent on education are based upon the policies and decisions of the Ontario Provincial Government. With a Provincial election just around the corner, your
vote matters. The Ontario Public School Boards’ Association has declared September 20as Education Day. In support, Toronto School Board Trustees are organizing all-candidate meetings in school board wards across the city. These non-partisan events are a great opportunity for voters to hear directly from their local candidates of the major provincial parties. Please join us to:
• learn more about key issues that affect public education in Ontario
• find out where your local candidates stand on questions that matter to parents in your community
Your local meeting will take place at:
• Etobicoke - Lakeshore, Etobicoke School of the Arts, September 20, 2011, 7:00 PM (Trustee Pamela Gough / Kate
Hammer)
For more information or to learn about other meeting locations, please visit: www.tdsb.on.ca/educationday or www.opsba.org
Sincerely,
Chris Bolton
