April 29, 2010

Thank you to Mrs. Heath as she held a second math competition for the students in grade 4 and 5. Results should be in shortly. At LKS, we believe it is important to continue to provide as many opportunities for the children to try different experiences that are challenging (i.e. math contests, grade 8 Skills Canada, Spelling Bee etc). Taking risks is a big part of life; as is learning to cope with success and failure. Congratulations to all of the students who participated.

At this time of the year, the ice-cream truck has begun parking on Marquis outside of the school as licensed by the City. We continue to work with him as he is to be 30 meters from the school and the park for safety reasons. Sometimes this doesn't always occur, and we will continue to ensure this happens for the safety of all of our students. Thank you for your support!

April 21st, 2011

Thank you so much to our Eco-Warriors and the committee of teachers and parents who organized all of our Earth Week activities. Today, the entire school met in the Shale Pit for a group shot. Check out SNAP for our "green" photo. A special thank you to Ms. Moser, Mrs. Cooper and Mrs. Besner for all their hard work.

Just a quick reminder that if your child will not be here in September, to please inform your class teacher and the office. The information is very important as we continue with our planning. As we head into the last two months of school, we will also be completing student placements. As in previous years, staff work together in teams to place the students in classes for the following September. Gender, academic achievement, social needs, and ministry caps are among the list of things that we consider when placing children. The goal of student placements is to have 'balanced' classes. As most of you know, we do not take 'teacher' requests from parents and we ask that you honour this part of the process. By the end of the year, teachers have a good understanding of their students and place the children accordingly. In most cases, staffing hasn't fully been completed until the end of the year, and as most of you know, changes happen all the way into September. We thank you in advance.

I hope you have a great long weekend. For those of you who celebrate Easter, I hope you have a wonderful time with your friends and family.

Many of you live in the area and attend LKS because of the sense of community and belonging that you feel. We would like to thank Jimmy, the new owner of Java Joe's, for believing in this too. Jimmy, has given us the opportunity to display our grade 8 "Still Life" at Java Joe's. On Wednesday, eight students and myself hung their artwork on the wall, and the exhibition looks fantastic. If you get a chance to go over, don't forget to take a look at the wall by the fireplace. Once again, we thank you Jimmy, as you have shown what it takes to be a good neighbour.

As we head into Spring,we are busy with staffing. Next year, we will have a school organization that looks like the following: Kindergarten Classes (6), 3 straight grade ones, 2 grade one/two splits, 2 straight grade two, 1 grade 2/3 split, 3 straight grade threes, one grade three/four split, 3 grade four classes, 3 grade five classes, 2 grade six classes, and 2 grade seven and eight classes respectively. As many of you know our organization is based on the student enrolment (about the same as last year), and the number of teachers that are allocated in each division (kindergarten, primary and junior/intermediate. Even though this is our current model, many things can occur between now and September, therefore there is always a chance of realignment in early September.

Thank you to the Student Council for organizing Pajama Day today! It was a great spirit day as many of the students and staff participated. Thank you also to Mrs. Laco, Mrs. Kress and the many classroom volunteers for our Pizza Lunch. Pizza Lunch is always a success with the students (and the parent who makes lunches in the household)!

We will be encouraging all the students to wear pink on Wednesday to help support the TDSB initiative for Anti-Bullying. Although anti-bullying is inherent in everything that we do at LKS, we must continue to bring awareness to the student body through events such as Pink Day!

We look forward to seeing you at Parent Council. Have a great weekend!
