Family Day!

I hope you all had a nice day celebrating with your family on Monday. The kids had lots of stories.

A big thank you to Mr. Bracht for organizing our wonderful grade 6-8 ski trip. Wednesday turned out to be a great day! It is a lot of work to get a ski day together and Mr. Bracht, you did a great job! Thank you to all the parents and staff who volunteered their time (and skills) also.

As many of you know, the painters have arrived upstairs. As mentioned earlier, the school received a grant to get some painting done. The prep work and some of the painting have started. By the way, the ultimate colour decision was made by some students-"Club Miami and Pumpkin Face" won!

Thank you to Mrs. Heath for organizing our Math Contests. We had over 150 students who competed in this year’s grade 6, 7 and 8 Math League contests. This year’s contest was very challenging. The Math League states that few students score as high as 28 points, and that students who are able to achieve 14 points are to be commended. This year, 43% of the students who wrote the grade 6 to 8 contests were able to achieve 14 or higher. This year’s contest winners are as follows:

Grade 6 – 1st place - Rebecca M and Will T(tie); 2nd place – Ben C; 3rd place – Thomas K, Jackson L, Turner M, and Josh VW(tie)

Grade 7 – 1st place - Ben W; 2nd place – Matthew B and Eric K(tie; 3rd place – Devon V

Grade 8 – 1st place - Emily B; 2nd place – Mykola P; 3rd place – Jane C

Award certificates for these award winners will be handed out at a future all-school assembly. LKS looks forward to hosting the Math League contests for grade 4 and 5 in mid-April.

Seeds of Hope

I forgot to mention in my last blog that the Seeds of Hope Club will be selling hearts on Valentine's Day. Please donate a dollar if you can, as the students have almost raised enough funds to build a school. What great citizens we have at LKS!

Happy Valentine's Day!

It has been a great week at LKS! On Monday, we had our Parent Council meeting in the library. Carly and Chelsea, our student council reps presented some ideas to spruce up our lunchroom. Although the lunchroom is open to all students from grade 1 through 8, sometimes our intermediates would like to eat in a "quieter" space. After surveying our grade 6-8 students, they were able to come up with some practical ideas, like room dividers, to make the space a bit "funkier". We'll keep trying to incorporate as many ideas as we can, as we all need a comfortable space to eat.

At the meeting, Ms. Kim also presented her students' PowerPoint presentations on our TDSB character traits. This year our school improvement plan goal was to incorporate technology and the character traits in our programs. Teachers will be participating in a variety of workshops this Spring. Through professional development, the teachers' skill level will improve therefore directly impacting student achievement. We are so lucky to have access to a lot of hardware at LKS and we have to make sure that we continue to use it effectively in our instruction. Ms. Kim's presentation really showed that the students have gained both literacy and technological skills. Congratulations! The students also shared their projects with our superintendent, Mrs. Philips-Long today. She was highly impressed with their knowledge and new skill levels. A special note of thanks to Sam and Claire! We will continue to share more student work as the year progresses.

The primary students also had a great day on the 10th celebrating the 100th day of school. It's so fascinating watching the kids complete their many activities around this concept.

Congratulations to our Senior Girls' Volleyball Team as they will be advancing on to a final tournament. Thanks for hosting the tournament and coaching Mr. Ross and Mr. Kuru.

Thank you to Mrs. Kress for stepping up to the "pizza lunch plate" as Mrs. Laco was sick this week. With the help of the grade 8 students, Mr. Lanis and many volunteers, the show went on and the kids were really happy. Thanks Mrs. Kress!

On a staffing level, Mme Freitas has extended her maternity leave and will not be returning this year. Mr. Pashko will be with us until the end of the year.

Just a reminder that report cards will be coming home on Monday and interviews will be held throughout the week.

February 3, 2010

Thank you to all the parents and new students who registered this week for kindergarten. We have approximately 50 new students so far and expect more in the next couple of weeks. If you know someone who hasn't registered yet, please have them call the school.

Thank you for your cooperation on the Snow Day. The students certainly had a fun time in the Shale Pit, but it does take a little bit of emergency child care planning if you still have to go to work. Hopefully, it doesn't happen for another 12years.

Report Cards will be coming home on the 14th and teachers are requesting interviews for students if there is a pressing matter or concern. If you feel you would like to talk to the teacher regardless, please make sure you contact them.

A big thank you to all of our grade 4-8 class Safety Reps who performed a skit on bullying to our grade 1-3 students today. They have been working since the holidays at lunches to create a play on bullying. The skit was followed by some questions and answers. This was a really meaningful experience for both the primary students and the safety reps as they demonstrated their leadership and organizational skills.

One final reminder that the grade 8 students are selling Candy Grams to raise funds for their Quebec Trip. At lunch, they will be selling nut-free "sweettarts' for a dollar.

See You In The Morning!

Hopefully everyone had a great day today playing in the snow. We will see you bright and early tomorrow morning. If you know someone who was to register for kindergarten today, please tell them to call the school to book another appointment for Friday. See you in the morning.

School Cancelled

As many of you heard today, the school will be closed. The first time in 12 years apparently. I was on my way in and heard the news so turned around. The intermediates will be happy as I'm sure the little ones are too. Good luck today and get out and play if you can! Cheers to Canada and the snow!

Let It Snow!

As we have all heard, it is too snow, snow and snow some more over the next couple of days! Please check the TDSB website and/or listen to your news station to see if buses and/or classes will be cancelled. Only the director can make that decision, although the intermediate students continue to send anonymous notes begging me to close the school! They are funny.
