Today, we wished Ms. Van Schoor good wishes as she will be having a new baby girl pretty soon. We welcome Mrs. Champgane to 2B for the remainder of the year. Mrs. Champgane has been at LKS for years and is quite familiar with end of year routines.

Thank you to all the students who participated in our Track and Field events today. It was a cold day to be outside all day. Congratulations to all of the students who tried their best, and a special note to those who will be moving to the next round. An additional congratulations to all of our athletes on the Ultimate Frisbee and soccer teams as they played many of their first games this week.

Thank you to Mrs. McGee and the parent volunteers who helped organize another successful Book Fair. The students really enjoy the book fairs and the proceeds are always helpful when booking future author visits and literacy events.

A final thank you to Mr. Samatowka for organizing our drumming performance for our grade 7 & 8 classes. The performance was spectacular; I'm sure our drummers were inspired!

The character trait for June is Perseverance. We hope that your family will have discussions around this very important trait.

Good luck to our grade 3 and 6 students as they begin EQAO next week. We hope to see you at our Spring Concerts next week.

May 27th, 2011

A big thank you to all the parents who organized this year's Springfest. Months of planning went into another successful event on Saturday. Springfest has been a long tradition at LKS and the kids look forward to it every year. A special thank you to Mrs. Kidd and Mrs. Fuda for your efforts as co-chairs.

We had a couple of incidents in the past week that you should know about. First, another car was broken into at lunch during pick up. Just a quick reminder not to leave any valuables in your car if parked around the school. The burglaries are quick and easy for these "purse snatchers". Secondly, please continue to review street proofing tips with your children if a stranger approaches them on the street. There have been some reporting of stopping some of the kids in our neighbourhood and south of Lakeshore.

Please remember that there is no school tomorrow (PA Day) and Monday (Victoria Day). Staff are at workshops, evaluating and/or team planning. I hope you have a great long weekend with your friends and family.

Parking

Apparently, the City will be laying cement for the pool on Thursday morning, so the back parking lot is closed. Please keep remaining spots for staff. We thank you in advance.
As you can see from our calendar, a lot of our students were engaged in some valuable lessons this week around the environment. Many of the activities are taking the children outside the classroom (i.e. Pioneer Village) which provides the opportunity to follow up on lessons taught within the class. There is a strong research base for learning outside the classroom, and we try to get the kids out on as many experiences as possible throughout their schooling. In the "old" days, the Board use to pay for transportation, but nowadays funds are taken from school budgets and/or requested from parents, therefore curtailing the amount of trips we would like to take. We thank you for supporting your child's experiential learning.

This week, staff reviewed "Blooms Taxonomy" focusing on the importance of student higher level thinking and asking a variety of questions that will engage the students at different levels. Those of you who are familiar with Blooms will know that higher level thinking questions will ask students to create (i.e. Can you propose an alternative to...? ) rather than just focusing on basic questions like (i.e. What is...?). As teachers, we use all types of questions depending on the task. If you want to learn more about questioning and how to incorporate these strategies at home, the following link may help:

There is an upcoming Ward Meeting with the Trustee and TDSB Director Chris Spence at Islington Public School on May 26th @ 7:00 p.m. Please RSVP to Adam Sproat at Adam.Sproat@tdsb.on.ca. If you require child-minding, please include the age of your child and any special needs.

In closing, just a note to our families who were impacted by the attacks on 9/11; our hearts have been with you this week and will continue to be so.

Have a wonderful weekend celebrating with your mom and the other terrific women in your life.
