Thanks to all of you who came to our concerts this week. The performances were outstanding. The students should be really proud of themselves. A big thank you to all of the staff and parents who helped out in the organization. We are really looking forward to our last kindergarten concert on Monday. That one should really get us in the holiday mood!

Today we delivered our gifts baskets to Stonegate and Ernesteins Women's Shelter (grade 7 & 8). Both organizations were truly appreciative of your generosity. A special thank you to Mrs. DELonghi and Mrs. Painting as they were instrumental in this very big undertaking. Also, to Chelsea and Carly for your leadership in this project. You too should be proud of your efforts.

Have a great weekend and we'll see you for carol singing next week.

You can tell the holiday season is around the corner. The sounds coming from the music room are so wonderful to hear as I pass by. The kids have been learning songs that represent how a variety of cultures celebrate the holidays and New Year. We are looking forward to seeing you next week so we can celebrate as an LKS community. Please remember to bring a canned food item as Ms. Walker has organized a small food drive for Second Harvest.

On the giving note, thanks to all of you have contributed to your class "laundry basket". The families at Stonegate and the Women's Shelter (Grade 7 & 8) will have a good holiday and winter because of your generosity. We actually used our donation drive as a great example of empathy for others at our intermediate Sharing Assembly on Wednesday.

This is a really busy time for many of our grade 8 students and parents. Many students are applying to specialized programs and private schools for a variety of different reasons. This application process really can be a stressful time for the family. While many of our students will be accepted into these desired programs, some will be rejected or be put on a waiting list. As a parent you will have to have a few tools to cope with this rejection. I went on-line to get you more advice, but I'm still searching for a great link. Hopefully, I can send that next week. Meanwhile, you may want to consider the following if dealing with rejection in general:

1. Allow for your child to show emotion-sad, anger, resentment, fear etc.
2. Listen attentively and validate your child's feelings.
3. Provide some reassurance and reinforce a positive self-esteem.
4. Use positive language-Tell them you love them and that you are proud of them.
5. Keep things in perceptive and model a balanced approach.

Hope this helps and let us know if we too can help.

Have a nice weekend.

Our Sharing Assemblies today focused on the character trait of "empathy". It is really impressive to hear the older students present their thoughts on what empathy means to them. It can be a hard concept to understand, but the students really do begin to understand what it means to really "walk in someones shoes" as they get older. Please follow up with these discussions at home also.

One way to really understand this concept is through the act of sharing with another person who is less fortunate. The students are learning about our Community Outreach drive for the holiday season as the toys and food are coming in quickly. We will be delivering our gifts on December 10th. We thank you for your community support!

On Tuesday, it was wonderful to host Philip Gray, a veteran who served as a bomber pilot in WWII. The grade 4-6 students listened intently as he shared his memories with us. Mr. Gray also wrote a book called, "Ghosts of Targets Past". If you are a history buff, you can get the book at the library. I haven't had a chance to see if you can get the book at a book store or on-line, but I'm sure we can. It looks like a good read.

Thank you for attending the parent/teacher interviews over the last couple of weeks. It was a great opportunity to see you in the school to discuss your child's progress. The intermediates interviewed in teams that took more time than usual, and we will work out those glitches for next time. It was nice to talk to those middle school parents as they waited. Lots of conversations with the grade 8 parents as they plan for high school next year.

We would like to congratulate Mrs. Zappi and her family as they recently adopted their new baby girl. Mrs. Zappi will be on a leave for the remainder of the year. We are in the process of interviewing for a new teacher. We welcome Ms. Sunde for the short term.

On Wednesday, we had a follow-up assembly to present the LKS cheque to the Terry Fox Foundation. This year we raised $22, 206.94, which brings our total to $306, 995.01, over the past 10 years. This truly is amazing. A big thank-you to all the students who helped Mrs. Gibson organize this big event for us, and a special thank you to Mrs. Gibson and Mrs. D'Angelo, our parent rep, who spent hours counting funds and organizing paperwork. Your efforts are appreciated.

Our Remembrance Day Assembly is on November 11th at 10:30 a.m. You are welcome to join us in the gym.

Just a reminder that we will be sending home the new Progress Reports on Monday, November 15th. We will include a letter explaining the new process, but if you want to see it earlier, see the website under Notices.

A big thank you to the grade 8 students for organizing the "Haunted House". This has become quite an exciting tradition at LKS! Another thank you to the community for coming to see the Hallowe'en Parade...again a great tradition that is so exciting for the kids. Have a wonderful time this weekend if you are trick or treating.

We've had a few cases of lice in the school since September. Please call the school if your child has lice as we need to send a letter home informing all parents of the class. It really is the best prevention to help control the situation. If your child does get them, please do not return to school unless all the nits are gone. . The public health nurse and some parent volunteers are going to check all the kids in the school next week. I've included the Toronto Public Health website if you want further information: http://www.toronto.ca/health/hl_index.htm

We'd like to thank all the parents who have come out to support the many sports teams that have had tournaments and finals over the last couple of weeks. The students and staff really appreciate a cheering audience. Congratulations to all the students for putting your best foot forward. Whether you win or lose, you always show a positive LKS spirit!

Congratulations to all the students who ran for Student Council. It takes a lot of confidence to give a speech in front of your peers, and you all did a great job. Good luck to the candidates.

Thank you again, to Mrs. Laco for organizing our Pizza Lunches. The students really enjoyed their lunches today!

Today we celebrated the Character Trait of Responsibility at our Sharing Assemblies. This is a trait that can be understood from Kindergarten to Grade 8 and it is evident that we have many LKS students who display this trait. Please follow up with the discussion of responsibility at home.

Thank you to everyone who came to our Internet Safety Presentation on Wednesday. Mrs. Dellandrea presented some key messages for parents to take back home and we will forward some links that will provide further tips for you. It's so important that we continue to educate ourselves to provide guidance for our children.

Staff have completed their team goals for the School Improvement Plan. As always, we will create a PowerPoint and present it at Parent Council and on our website.

I have two requests of you: Could you call me if you know someone who could play the bagpipes at our Remembrance Day Assembly. We are still looking for a veteran who may want to speak also. In addition, I'm looking for wood picture frames that would fit grade 8 art drawings (15" X 17" or larger). If you have any old frames you aren't using, we'll take them. Thanks so much!

Kiss and Ride Reminders
Kiss & Ride is still in need of more volunteers to make this valuable service run smoothly. If you can help at least once a month from 8:20-8:50, please contact Nori Ayer at norigeorge@rogers.com .

Unfortunately, at this time, we are not able to escort Kindergarten children to their classroom. And please remember that the volunteers are just that....volunteers helping your children....so please be courteous and polite and understand they are trying their best.

Also please remember that at lunch and after school there is no Kiss & Ride so please help to keep our children safe by keeping the following in mind:
- Remind your children to not wander through the parking lot looking for you
- Please do not park in the exit lanes beside the fence
- Do not park and wait for your children in the lanes and block others from exiting the parking lot.

Happy Thanksgiving

I am so happy to be in a school that keeps us busy. Busy is a good sign because it means that we are doing more for the children. One activity that keeps us busy and that the kids love is Pizza Lunches. Mrs. Laco, our parent rep, reminds everyone that the pizza lunch forms need to be submitted by this Wednesday the 13th. Late forms cannot participate in the first pizza lunch on October 22. Kindergarten participation is only on June 29th and the forms for their lunch will be distributed in May.

Next week,Allison Dellandrea, another parent, has volunteered to present a workshop on Internet safety to our parent community. We are so appreciative as this is such valuable information. We also have the pleasure of working with Mrs. Dellandrea in the classroom with the older students throughout the year. The following will give you an idea of what she will be presenting. We hope to see you there.

Are you wondering where your children might be going on-line?
Struggling to keep up with your kids’ use of technology, and social networking?
Do you want to increase your knowledge about how to guard your kids against inappropriate Internet content, cyberbullying, and on-line predators?
Would you like to learn more about:
• Instant messaging (on computers and handheld devices)
• Social networking sites (Facebook, MSN)
• Strategies for protecting personal information on-line
• “webfilters” and “parental controls”
• Where and how to report on-line exploitation, or concerning content
• Reliable resources for you and your children

If so, please come to this one-hour ‘primer’ in Internet Safety for Parents, led by LKS Mom and Internet Child Exploitation prosecutor, Allison Dellandrea, and a member of the Toronto Police Service.

Date & Times: Wednesday, October 13th. 2-3 pm or 6-7 pm
Location: Room 211

PLEASE SIGN IN AT THE OFFICE FIRST FOR A VISITOR TAG!

We hope you all have a wonderful weekend with your family and friends.

On Thursday afternoon we all participated in our annual Terry Fox Walk. What a wonderful day to celebrate the good work of Terry Fox! The children really enjoy this very special event, and they truly begin to understand the idea of "giving back" as they continue to grow. These are the values that we as a community will continue to instill in our young people. Thank you to all the parents who attended.

We'd also like to welcome Mrs. Pagnotta who will be teaching the junior French as Mme Locicero retired last week.

Good luck to our sports teams over the next couple of weeks. Be the Best that You Can Be!

Mme Locicero

We'd like to announce that Mme Locicero has decided to retire. We would like to thank her for her commitment to the French program, her students and colleagues. Mme worked diligently over the last few years to update our French resources, including our new French books, in order to improve the students' oral and reading skills. Mme Locicero's experience and love of learning will be missed on staff. We are currently interviewing for a replacement. We will blog more details on Friday.

Thanks to all of you for attending Curriculum Night on Thursday. To follow up on the evening, you can access the grade team's long range plans on the website after Monday.

Again, the major focus for us over the next few years will continue not only to purchase new IT hardware and software, but to use it effectively in the classroom to improve student achievement. Staff are committed to improve their skills by participating in professional development in order to be the best that we can be in this area.

I hope you enjoy the weekend everyone!

Rembrance Day

I'm just trying to do a little pre-planning for our Remembrance Day Assembly. If anyone in the community knows of a veteran who could speak at our assembly, could you please call me at the school @ 394-7890.

September 17th

This week has gone by so quickly. I can't believe it is Friday already. It seems like we are settling into our routines now. A sure sign of Fall for me is when I see the kids out for cross-country, softball and football. Those early morning practices have been quite cold this week!

We are looking forward to seeing you on Curriculum night. The kindergarten presentations will begin at 5:30 p.m., the primary and Mr. Littlejohn's presentations are at 6:00 p.m. , staff introductions will be at 6:30 p.m. and the junior and intermediate staff will present at 7:00 p.m. Please check your teacher's blog, website or email for locations or on our website under notices.

We also want to thank you very much for volunteering in the school. You do so much for us. If you are going to volunteer in any capacity, please come to the office to pick up a police reference check. If you already had a check done, you'll need to visit Mrs. Stefanowicz in the office to complete the annual declaration on-line. Every volunteer must have a police reference check. Thank you in advance. Please visit our website under notices for further information.

This year, the Ministry has created a new process for our reporting procedures. You will receive one Progress Report in November, followed by two standard Report Cards in February and June. Parent/Teacher Interviews will still be scheduled in November and February. Senior Kindergarten Reports will be sent home in November, Junior Reports in February and both JK/SK students receive a final report in June.

The first Parent Council Meeting is Monday, September 20th at 7:00PM in the school library. September 10th

Thank you for a wonderful week. It was really nice catching up with many of you.

As some of you know we didn't have a big "realignment", but we did shuffle some students around so we now only have one grade 1/2 split and the other split was made a straight one. Currently, we have 722 students. We still have families away and some registering, so that number will fluctuate a bit.

We have almost completed our staffing. We'd like to welcome Mr. Pashko who will be replacing Mme Freitas, our grade 6-8 French teacher, until February. We would also like to welcome Mrs. Whale and Mrs. Scott-Mackey, our new classroom assistants.

Have a great weekend everyone!
P.S. If you have a child running in Cross-Country, we aren't meeting at 7:30 in the morning...be there around 8:45 or so. Thanks.

From Parent Council...

Hello Parents,

We currently have many of the grade parent positions filled, however; we still have a few gaps. If you can help with this rewarding experience, please contact Diane Kress 416-236-1477 or dkress@thinknet.com.

For those new to the school a grade parent administers and helps organize class and school events. Helping with these tasks enriches the students' learning experience by allowing teachers to focus on their students instead of administrative tasks. Activities generally include:distributing the class contact list upon permission from the parents and teacher; recruiting volunteers for activities according to the teacher's needs; recruiting volunteers for Parent Council fundraising activities or LKS functions and informing class parents of upcoming LKS and classroom events via email.

Last Week

Thank you to all the staff and families who attended last night's graduation. We are going to miss this year's graduates as they have brought us much joy over the last few years. Thank you again to all the parents on the graduation committees as the decorations and food were fabulous. It was a special send off!

As the year end approaches, I do want to express my gratitude to the LKS community. Thank you for supporting myself, Mr. Lanis and all the staff. Your support allows us to continue to grow as educators and gives us the opportunity to be the best that we can be for your children.

We’d like to thank all staff for their commitment to the students of LKS and the community. I congratulate them as we continue to work together as teams to prepare and deliver the best programs that we can. The following teachers will be here for the 2010/2011 school year. Kindergarten-Mr. Blais, Ms. Raymond, Mrs. Tyndall, Mrs. MacPherson; Grade 1/2- Mrs. Gibson and Mrs. Olson; Grade 1-Mrs. Younger, Mrs. Hall ; Grade 2 – Ms. Mandel, Ms. VanSchoor, Mrs. Seitz; Grade 2/3-Mr. Ross and Mrs. Bradshaw; Grade 3-Mrs. Zappi, Ms. Shklar, Mrs. Adair; Grade 4- Mrs. Taylor, Mr. Littlejohn, Ms. Kim, Grade 5-Ms. Iafrate, Mrs. Young (5/6 Split), Ms. Walker; Grade 6-Mrs. Caligiuri, Mr. Ourique; Grade 7- Ms. Moser, Mr. Kuru; Grade 8-Mr. Ellerker, TBA; Special Education-Mrs. Dacyshyn, Mrs. Heath, Mrs. Caligiuri ; Physical Education-Mr. Bracht; Physical Education/Computers-Mr. Elias; French-Mme Locicero, Mme Freitas; Library-Mrs. McGee; Music-Ms. Hoffman

We do wish Ms. Buksner, Mrs. Perry and Dr. deBraga best wishes with their future plans. We will miss them terribly as each has contributed to many students’ lives. During her one year with us, Ms. Buksner has contributed to many extra-curricular activities, especially coaching and EcoSchools. Ms. Perry will be remembered for her outstanding work with our ECOSchools; her efforts played an integral part in LKS being awarded the Gold standard. Her leadership on staff will be missed. Finally Dr. deBraga has been with us for the past 13 years. His commitment to extracurricular activities including the arts and sports will be missed. Furthermore, his ability to inspire students, especially in intermediate mathematics and science, is to be highly commended. Best wishes to Mme Alam who has accepted a permanent teaching position for September. Thank you for filling in for Mme Freitas.

Report Cards will go home on Monday. If you are absent, they will be mailed home during the summer. Please remember the last day will be busy with the Year End Assembly starting around 9:20 and Lunch on the Lawn. Thank you to Mrs. Laco and her volunteers for arranging another Pizza Lunch. We are hoping for a nice day!

There are spaces available for the B & A Summer Camp. If you are interested, please call 416-394-6400.

We hope you have a wonderful summer and we will see you on September 7th. The office will reopen on August 30th for new registrations.

Last Full Week!

Thank you to all the parents who came to our final Sharing Assemblies last week. The students were recognized for the character trait "Perseverance".

We also welcomed back our grade 8 staff and students from Quebec. They had a wonderful time together. We are looking forward to their graduation next Friday.

At this time of the year, the students have been completing a variety of summative assessments and evaluations. We just received the results back for our grade 3-8 CTBS-Canadian Test of Basic Skills. The students showed quite an improvement from the Fall compared to the Spring. Congratulations! (The results will be posted our the web under the data section).

Remember, final report cards will be sent home on June 28th. The 2010 staff will be listed on my blog next Friday in case you are interested.

Recently there has been another outbreak of lice. Even though we have a professional check the kids at the school on a regular basis, we still get cases. If your child gets lice, please remember to tell the school, shampoo and pick out all the nits. When your child returns, we recheck on a regular basis to make sure all the nits are gone. The kids cannot return with any nits. It may be a good idea to keep looking at home. Thank you.

Dental Screening

Just a reminder that Public Health will be screening the children from Kindergarten to grade 8 from June 7th-15th. The dental hygienist screens for oral health problems and contacts the parents whose children are identified as requiring dental services. This free screening is the same annual screening as in the past. The actual parent letter from Public Health is on our website under Notices.

Thank you to all the relatives who attended our Middle School Concert on Thursday night. The students never cease to amaze me. The chosen pieces really reflected the talents of our students. Thank you for supporting the Arts at LKS-a good portion of your financial contributions to the school are delegated to the instrumental program; it takes a lot of money to actual purchase and maintain the instruments and sound systems. Both are used extensively at the school. Thank you!

Good Luck to all the athletes at Track and Field on Monday and to the grade 8 staff and students going to Quebec! Have fun!

First Week of June!

It's a very busy time of year for the students as many are finishing up projects and assignments. Our grade 3 to 8 students have just completed the Spring Canadian Test of Basic Skills (CTBS) and our grade 3 & 6 students will be completing the EQAO assessment next week. Our staff will use the results as informal assessment tools for further programming and evaluation.

Just a reminder that the Character Trait for June is 'Perseverance'. We just celebrated 'Integrity' at this week's Sharing Assemblies. This is a hard concept to understand, especially for the little ones, but can be described by choosing to do the right thing. We also told the kids that it is alright to make mistakes, but the important thing is to learn from them for the future.

Please visit our website to download the Day Schedule and Year Calendar fro 2010/2011.

I got a call from Parks and Rec to remind the parents in the community that the pool will be under renovations this summer.

Thank You!

Thank you to all of the parents, students and staff who helped out with Springfest. It was a great day for the children and adults! Springfest is a long-standing tradition and it is important to continue having these community building activities. I really do feel privledged to be part of this day at LKS! Thank you to the members of Parent Council who have worked for months on organizing the day.

Also, thank you to all the parents who came to the Volunteer Tea on Thursday after school. The treats and punch are just a small token of our appreciation for all that you do for the students and teachers at the school. We wouldn't be LKS without you!

Just a reminder that if your child has chicken-pox or lice to please contact the school. Once we know, we send home a general letter informing parents.

We practised our first of three Spring fire drills today. The students are very mindful of the importance of these practices.

The Village of Islington is hosting their "Paint the Street!" festival to be held in Michael Power Park on Saturday June 5, 2010, noon to 5 pm.

I hope you all have a great long-weekend.

Happy Springfest!

We hope everyone has a great day on Saturday at Springfest...we hope it is sunny and warm! A big thank you to all the parents on the organizing committee as it takes an enormous amount of time to organize this big event.

Recently, we have had a few more cases of lice. If your child contacts lice, please inform the school as we normally send home a generic letter from Public Health. Please make sure you shampoo (use the lice shampoo), comb out the hair using a "nit" comb and then pick out all the nits. Your child can return to school once all the nits are picked out.I sympathize with all the families who have been affected-my family has gone through it before and it is a lot of work!

In addition, if your child is experiencing any flu-like symptoms (i.e. throwing up), please keep them home for 24 hours (the advice from Public Health) and take them to the doctor if you deem necessary. Please call the school if your child will be away.

If you haven't done so already, please take some time to complete the parent survey from the Director of Education, Chris Spence. The survey can be located at www.tdsb.on.ca/parentsurvey.

Do you like to run...try out the Etobicoke Track and Field Club at www.etobicoketrack.ca/sportscamp-a few of our LKS students have joined in the past and have had some good experiences with the club.

Thank you for coming to the school on Tuesday to support the Photography Exhibition. The grade 8 students including Bella, Maddie, Morganna, Teighan, Katie, Emily, Scott, Christian, Cam, Georgia, Sammy and David should be very proud of the work they did to put on such a great show. Congratulations to all of our budding photographers in Mr. Blais' class, Mrs. Taylor's class and the two grade 8 classes. A special congratulations goes to the top six photographers in grade 8; Bella, Cam, Lucas, Maddie, Morganna and Christian. The grade 5-8 students and adults voted on these six for their favourite photo. Congratulations to the top three students including Lucas (waterfall), Cam (bird on beach) and Bella (flower); their photos will be displayed at the Contact Exhibition at the AGO from May 14th - May30th.

Check out the LKS Springfest Silent Auction Blog! Remember we're an Eco-School--there will be no hard copy catalogue going home this year. The blog will be updated as new items arrive.....so check back often to see the latest items!

First Week of May!

Today we reminded the children of appropriate dress wear during the next couple months of warm weather. We are strongly encouraging the following:

-no hats including any headgear (i.e. bandanna)
-tops need to cover bra straps
-pants need to cover undergarments
-skirts, shorts and dresses need to be just above the knee
-no inappropriate sayings or images on T-shirts

Please reiterate the importance of dressing appropriately, especially with any children in the older grades. We thank you in advance.

We hope to see all the volunteers at the Volunteer Tea on May 20th. If you have volunteered in the class, for a club, drove for a sports team etc, we would really like to see you there to thank you, in our small way, for all that you do to help us out.

If you are around the school on Tuesday, May 4th, please visit the grade 8 photography exhibition in the gym. The grade 8 classes, Mr. Blais' class and Mrs. Taylor's class under the direction of Mr. Elias have taken some beautiful shots of the environment and they will be on display between 8:15 and 4:30. You will also have an opportunity to vote for the top grade 8 piece to be displayed at the AGO in the Contact Photography Exhibition on May 14th.

April Events

We had a very interesting week at LKS beginning with our long awaited production of Beauty and the Beast. We congratulate all those involved including the students, staff and parent volunteers. It was so entertaining and the kids had such a great time. Thank you for supporting this very large endeavor.

Springfest is Going GREEN!!
-------------------------------------

Be sure to keep Saturday May 15th free from 10am-2pm for the annual LKS Springfest Celebration. In keeping with our eco-theme, Springfest is going green....we're aiming for less packaging, less waste, and more fun for everyone!

The Silent Auction will publish all items (including pictures!!) on an online blog instead of sending out the paper catalogue. Stay tuned for the blog address in the next few weeks.....

The ever-popular Tombola game will still be the same, we're just adding some new twists! Instead of buying all those tombola's, we are asking parents to instead purchase one or more $5 tombola leaves. Each classroom will display their leaves on a tree and the class with the most leaves will still win the traditional pizza lunch. Half of the money collected will go directly to the school, and the other half will help buy grand prizes for the game. Remember to bring your own coffee mug and tote bag to carry all your goodies, and please use the recycling bins on site.

Stay tuned for more info coming your way soon! Questions? Contact:

Dj.greifenberger@sympatico.ca for Springfest, and jilltyndall@gmail.com for Tombola.

Finally, as some of you may know already, some of our families in the community have suffered losses recently as close family members have passed away. Yesterday we attended a funeral for the mother of one of our students. It is during these times we really do have to lean on each other and be as supportive as we can. Our thoughts continue to be with our families who are in similar situations currently.

We are looking forward to all the earth celebrations next week. Once again our Eco Committee has done a fabulous job of bringing in activities for the kids to continue to bring awareness and education to the school community. Please look for their calendar of activities on our website.

Looking forward to seeing you at the LKS Fundraising Gala on Saturday night.

Safety

Today we were able to practise our safety procedures with the children as a result of someone not wearing an identification badge. It was a good reminder again, for all staff and parents of the importance of wearing an identification badge. A reminder again to all parents to please sign in at the office and to wear a visitor's badge. Do not go into the school without coming to the office first. We thank you in advance.

Safety

Today, a man used our boy's washroom without announcing himself to the office; he came in through the southeast doors as kids were coming in and out of the doors. He was a construction worker working on a house around the corner. Mr. Lanis and myself went to the house to confirm his story and to reiterate the consequences of his actions. We initially found out about the incident as two of our grade 5 boys saw him and told the office. The boys are to be commended for knowing what to do and we are so proud of them. We've discussed this as a staff and reviewed our safety procedures. We would also like to remind all visitors to report to the office, sign in and wear our visitors badge. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Interactive Voice Mail

In order to improve our communication with the community, we have signed up for a new voice mail system that will call home for community announcements and attendance. It is very similar to the system that most high schools use. Currently, we are set up only for the community announcements. We will use this system sparingly (i.e fire/smoke at the school, bomb threats etc) as we do not want you to get tired of us! We are practising tonight with an announcement about the upcoming LKS Fundraiser Gala. The system should be calling between 5:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. Please listen to the entire message before hanging up or you may get another call. If there is a glitch, please call the school at 394-7890 and tell the office. Thank you for the support.

April Snow?

April Showers? April Snow? What a crazy week of weather. Hopefully this weekend will be nice so we can get outside.

It was another busy week for our grade 5 and 7 Badminton teams as both had tournaments. Some players will be moving on to the next round. We also wish our Swim team luck at their meet next week.

This week some of our grade 8 students organized a wonderful staff lunch that featured food from around the world. We had such a good time and great food. The kids raised a little over $200 for Haiti. I love to see the students take on these leadership roles.

Good luck to all the students who will be participating in the musical next week. They have put in so many hours of rehearsals over the last few months. We hope to see you out next week!

First Week of April

For those of you who are interested, the 2010-2011 calendar has been published and can be found on our website and the TDSB website. Please remember the calendar is draft and is pending Ministry approval. We will post the final calendar when it is published from the Board.

It looks like April will continue to be a busy month. We are really looking forward to the school play, 'Beauty and the Beast' and the Parent Council Fundraising Gala. Both should be prove to be great for our community spirit! Beauty and Beast tickets will be on sale next week before and after school.

As part of the process to improve parent engagement, a Parent Satisfaction Survey is being conducted across the TDSB. This is an opportunity for parents to provide feedback about our schools. The survey will be available online only in 22 languages
beginning on Tuesday April 6 and can be accessed at: www.tdsb.on.ca/parentsurvey.

I hope you have a great long weekend.

Earth Hour at LKS!

Welcome back to the beginning of third term. I do hope you all had a great break! This week seemed to pass by so quickly as we all got back into the swing of things. I hope the remainder of the year doesn't go by so fast!

Congratulations to all the students who participated in the swim meet on Thursday. We are looking forward to the City Finals in a couple of weeks.

We've had a very productive week for staff development. Ms. Moser and Mrs. Shklar both attended a Family of School Workshop where they had the opportunity to share the good things the grade 3 and 6 teachers have been working on in literacy with their students. The focus in writing has been on writing 'summaries'. This was a great opportunity to network with other teachers and to participate in extended professional development. Ms. Moser, Mr. Ourique, Mr. Littlejohn and Mrs. Iafrate also had the opportunity to work with our assigned math instructional leader to develop more opportunities for using manipulatives in the classroom. It proved to be a practical experience as the teachers were able to use some of the suggestions already. Our primary math reps (Mrs. Olson, Mr. Ross, Ms. Kim, Ms. vanSchoor and Mrs. Hall) were also given time to explore more math lessons using the Smart Board and new math resources on the market. Finally, Mrs. Raymond and Mrs. MacPherson also worked with our instructional leader to further introduce more hands-on practical experiences with the kindergarten students.

Mr. Samotowka would like to remind you that applications for the Toronto Summer Music Camp at Albion Hills and Mono Cliffs were handed out just before March Break. The camp is open to any grade 5-8 band or strings student in the TDSB.

Camp 1 – July 3rd – July 11th
(Band Camp at Albion Hills & Orchestra Camp at Mono Cliffs)
Camp 2 – July 13th – July 18th
(Band Camp at Albion Hills & Orchestra Camp at Mono Cliffs)
Camp 3 – July 20th – July 25th
(Orchestra Camp at Mono Cliffs)

For more information, go to : www.tdsbsummercamps.ca or contact Mr. Samotowka directly at: toronto_summer_music_camp@yahoo.ca

Have a great weekend!

P.S. The amazing shot of the stingray was taken from Christian (Grade 8) on his family vacation!

Happy March Break!

Congratulations to the Senior Boys' Hockey Team as they played in the City Finals at Varsity on Thursday. The boys lost to Joseph Howe in an exciting game. The grade 4-8 classes were very supportive from the bleachers. Thanks for showing great spirit LKS!

As second term comes to an end, staff continue to work on their team goals. More staff have been trained on the Smart Boards and we will continue this over the next few years. Currently, we have two portable and two fixed Boards. We hope to build on this number with the help of Parent Council. Over the next month our math grade reps will be participating in workshops that focus on using manipulatives and problem solving and the grade three and six teachers continue to work with our literacy coach on their writing programs. Please look at our website to read more on our LKS School Improvement Plan.

In late Spring, we will also be completing student placements. As in previous years, staff work together in teams to place the students in classes for the following September. Gender, academic achievement, social needs, and ministry caps are among the list of things that we consider when placing children. The goal of student placements is to have 'balanced' classes. As most of you know, we do not take 'teacher' requests from parents and we ask that you honour this part of the process. By the end of the year, teachers have a good understanding of their students and place the children accordingly. In most cases, staffing hasn't fully been completed until the end of the year, and as most of you know, changes happen all the way into September. We thank you in advance.

We hope you have a wonderful break with your families and friends over the holidays and we will see you on the 22nd.

Congratulations also goes to our Junior Girls Volleyball Team as they won the Semi-Finals in the West, but lost in the Conference Finals. First Week of March

Today, the students attended assemblies to become more aware around Anaphylaxis. The interactive production taught the students about the causes, symptoms and emergency responses. Also, most of the classes were taught how to use an EpiPen with a "trainer pen". In addition to the assemblies, many parents dropped in throughout the morning to visit the display from Anaphylaxis Canada. A big thank you to Mrs. Young, Mrs. Miller and Mrs. Perry for organizing the entire morning for us. The information provided to the community will be invaluable.

Next week, you will also be receiving a pamphlet on the 'MedicAlert no child without' program. This pamphlet will give you information on how to receive free medical identification services for children age 4-14. Just call the number on the back and quote the bar code and pin number.

Today, the grade 6 and 8 classes built airplanes and wind tunnels with an engineer from Bombardier. I learned a valuable lesson-don't stand in the flight path of a grade 8 student's plane! The kids really had a great time learning. Again, thank you to Mrs. Turner for organizing this event.

Just a reminder that the report cards go home on Monday and Parent/Teacher Interviews are officially scheduled for Thursday evening and Friday, or other convenient times. Generally, second term appointments are scheduled if there are areas of concern.

Good luck next week to our school teams!

Last Week of February

What a terrific day we had celebrating the Olympics at LKS! The weather co-operated so we could get outside, and the students really seemed to enjoy the activities. Thank you to all the staff, including Ms. Moser, Student Council and the grade 8 students for organizing such a wonderful event!

On a cautionary note, please remind your children of the street proofing tips that we discuss at school. The police have been patrolling the neighbourhood a little more this week as one of our older students was going home for lunch and a suspicious person followed him for a bit. Please remember to tell the kids that if they suspect anything similar to actually 'scream' and stick to the main roads. Most kids feel 'weird' screaming, but the police say it really does help in those situations. We will also be reminding the kids over the next couple of weeks. The students should also try to walk in groups or with a partner. I also looked under the Toronto Police website and found further tips, under Crime Prevention.

Final Farewells

We had a beautiful assembly today to say our final farewells to Mr. McLean. A big thank you to all the students who shared their thoughts and to the community for their support.

Next week, teachers will be inviting parents to interviews that will be held on March 4th (evening) and the 5th. The second term interviews are generally requested if there is a concern. Parents may also request an interview. Report cards will be sent home on March 1st.

Thank you for all the information regarding our graffiti. Suspects have been investigated by the police. Please do not hesitate to call me if you have any other information. We will continue to take any vandalism to our school seriously.

Thank you to Student Council for organizing our Olympics on the 19th. Each student in grades 1-7 has been assigned to a team. We encourage the students to wear his/her team colours (these have been included in the grade parent letter). All students will participate in the Opening Ceremonies @ 9:00(ish) followed by the grade 1-3 students enjoying some fun games in the morning and the grade 4-7 students in the afternoon. The grade 8 students have shown great leadership skills in helping organize this fun event.

Graffiti

As many of you are aware by now, our school was vandalized for the second time over the last few weekends. The graffiti is obscene and racist in nature. The police are investigating and TDSB will be removing it ASAP-they act very quickly in these cases. If anyone has any information, please either call me at the school (416-394-7890) or come into the office. Thank you. Kelly Caddel

February 12th

We are very excited to be hosting an educational day for both parents and students at LKS to bring more awareness surrounding life-threatening allergies. I would like to thank Mrs. Young, Mrs. Miller and Mrs. Perry for organizing our assemblies and demonstration tables for parents. The following is a message from the committee:

Could YOU save a life? Does your child or anyone you know suffer from a life-threatening allergy? Come join Anaphylaxis Canada at LKS on Friday, February 26th for a morning of Allergy Alert Education. You will learn how to recognize the physical symptoms of an anaphylactic reaction and how to help prevent a reaction in order to keep LKS allergic children safe.

From Mrs. Forte, our guidance counselor...On Monday February 1, 2010, 820 grade 8 students descended upon Lakeshore Collegiate to experience the first ever Family of Schools Career Day! Topics included plumbers, lawyers, paramedics, veterinarians, fire fighters, arborists, insurance, sales, stunt men, social workers, canine education officers, military reservists, fruit importers and many more. Students were treated to inside knowledge from a variety of career pathways, including: what a typical day is like, the positives and negatives of specific careers and the variety of pathways one can take within a field of work. Students also had the opportunity to hear from two different motivational speakers who encouraged them to go for their dreams, believe in themselves and work hard to achieve success.

Once again, congratulations to Mr. Mclean on his move as vice-principal to Second Steet. We will miss him. We welcome Mr. Chris Lanis as our new vice-principal. Please see our website (under noticees) to read a letter regarding the move from our superintendent, Jim Spyropoulos.

Congratulations Mr. Mclean

We'd like to inform you that Mr. Mclean will be leaving Lambton-Kingsway as of February 12th to start his new vice-principal position at Second Street. We are so sorry to see him leave and he will be missed. We welcome Chris Lanis as our new Vice-Principal. Mr. Lanis is looking forward to coming to LKS after Family Day. He brings with him a strong teaching background and commitment to sports. This move was made "official" last night and more details will follow in the superintendent's letter to the community that will be posted on our website shortly.

Welcome February!

Once again, we'd like to thank all the children who have wanted to contribute to the people in Haiti. The students in the Seeds of Hope Club, will be hosting an assembly on February 18th. The day of the assembly, they are asking the children to bring in a small donation to their teacher to help contribute to Haiti. All donations will be given to both the Red Cross and Feed the Children.

Thank you to all the parents on the Parent Council Literacy Committee, who along side Mrs. McGee, our librarian, brought in a favourite author of the students, Cheryl Thorton. Mrs. Thorton helped us celebrate Family Literacy Day at LKS with her lively storytelling.

As many of you know, the two grade 8 classes have been separated into single-gender classes for the month of January. The grade 8 staff, myself included (being the art teacher), with the ongoing support of the parents, have really appreciated this past month as it has given us the opportunity to explore our instructional strategies and further develop our own professional development. Throughout our in-house action research project, we have gathered some data from staff, parents and the students. We are in the final stages of collection and will be ready to share our insights in the next couple of months to the grade 8 parents and at a parent council meeting.

The Character Trait for February is "Fairness". We will be discussing this in the classrooms and encourage you to do the same at home. Thank you.

Haiti Relief

Thank you to all the children for their wonderful ideas on how to help the people in Haiti. It is times like this when you see how kind and empathatic the students can be. Some of the classes and clubs will be organizing some low-key events to help raise funds for the relief effort over the next few months. All money will be donated to either Free the Children or Red Cross. Thank you for supporting their efforts.

Last Week of January!

Well, we are hard at work at LKS! Teachers will be completing final assessments over the next few weeks in order to start writing second term report cards. This term certainly has gone by quickly.

Just a reminder that Kindergarten Registration is scheduled for Feb 10th and 11th. We also found out that we will be "closed" to any optional attendance for September 2010. That means that no one can register at LKS unless they live in the boundaries. This has been the practice for many years.

Some of you may have heard that new legislation regarding safety in schools comes into effect on February 2010. Basically, Bill 157 requires all employees of the board to report any incidents to the Principal that could result in a suspension or expulsion, and parents of the victim must be informed. For many of us, these aren't new practices, it is now an amendment of the Education Act.

A MESSAGE FROM QSP AND YOUR FALL FUNDRAISING COMMITTEE:

January is a time when we receive many inquiries at our service line. Customers want to know exactly when their subscriptions will start and we can answer that question in less than one minute. But YOU need to call us to get assistance!!!
Our service is 1-800-667-2536. Orders can still be placed at www.qsp.ca which will continue to raise money! It's a perfect time to order Easter or Mother's Day gifts!

We'd like to take this time to thank you for supporting the many initiatives in our school. The funds raised through our Parent Council has gone to a variety of areas that contribute to the academic and social success of our students. Two such programs the kids really enjoy are the Scientist in the School and Artist in the School. As you can see below, most class visits have been arranged for the upcoming months. Please look for the kids'work in our hallways!

January's Character Trait is "Teamwork". We will be stressing this in the classroom and outside at recess and lunch. We hope that you could also discuss the importance of this character trait at home!
