November 25th, 2011

We had some great speakers at the school this week. On Monday, the grade 8 students and staff had the pleasure of listening to and speaking with Mrs. Dellandrea, an LKS mom and Crown Attorney, specializing in child exploitation on the Internet. We've hosted this talk for three years at the senior level, and it always proves to be real and practical for the students.

On Tuesday night, we hosted a parent/staff information night on Eating Disorders. I really want to say thanks to the parents and staff who attended and I thank you for our conversations. If you are in need of more information or support, please call the National Eating Disorders Information Center at 416-340-4156.

Next Wednesday, our Seeds of Hope members will be taking a "Vow of Silence" to help raise awareness and funds to the same village where our school was built. We will be helping with medical supplies this year. We are in our third year commitment. A club like this is so important, as it continues to raise our social consciousness. Thank you to Mrs. Adiar, Mrs. Zappi and Mrs. Olson for your leadership.

Hope to see you at tomorrow night's Parent Council social. A big thank you to Kim DeLonghi, Dianne Quintal, Kristi Karens and Freya Painting for keeping us social.

We've all had a busy week as teachers have completed report cards and parent/teacher interviews have been conducted over the last few days. Please remember that there is no school on Friday as some teachers are finishing up interviews.

On Monday's Parent Council meeting, we presented our School Improvement Plan; you can access it under the Curriculum section of our website. The SIP is a process that staff undertake to set long term and short range goals based on their students' needs. We continue to revisit these goals, and post final outcomes at the end of the year.

I look forward to seeing you at our first parent information night on "Eating Disorders". I encourage you to attend, no matter the age or gender of your child. The workshop will be in the library at 6:00 p.m.

Toronto Police Services
Many of our schools, including LKS, work closely with the 22 Division and we are grateful for their support. The following message is from Constable Cashmore:

I am the new social media officer/ community officer at 22 Division. In the event of a school lockdown or any other incident in 22 Division we will be posting live updates to media, residents and family members via these social media sites. This gives the end user an immediate answer as and when we know it to what's going on in their division and home area live and interactive.

This is also a great way to ask us any questions and raise your concerns. Like all initiatives we need the full buy in from our community for this to be a success. If you have information you want us to pass on please feel free to call me or email me and I will post it on our site.

Today, we held our Remembrance Day Assembly in the gym for all the students, staff and community. I'd like to thank you for attending as the kids see Remembrance Day as a community event; something to be shared together, and honoured. I'd like to thank Ms. Moser, Ms. Hoffman and Ms. McGee for organizing this event today; it was a beautiful ceremony. Again, thank you to the families who donated items to our community display in the front hall, and to Mrs. Armstrong and Mrs. Wolfer (Alumni Parents) who created such a beautiful collage of memories. The students who performed today should also be recognized; your performances were beautifully done. Excellent job to Kaitlyn and Paul.

On Monday, Progress Reports will be going home and we will begin our week of interviews. My "report card" letter will be attached with this week's grade parent letter. I'm also sending along this link for you as it is a good article on how to talk to your child about report cards: http://school.familyeducation.com/report-cards/parents-and-school/38368.html.

I'd also like to thank our Kindergarten Parents for completing our on-line Literacy Survey. The kindergarten team will be looking at the collected data to help form the basis of an upcoming workshop. We are grateful for your support.

Congratulations to Mrs. Shklar, our grade two/three teacher, on the birth of her first baby. Best wishes to your new family.

Thank you to Mr. Lanis for arranging the anti-bullying presentation on Wednesday. The presenters were so dynamic and talented. They really held the students' attention while delivering their anti-bullying message-I still want to know how he balanced the ladder on his chin?

Thank you to everyone who came out on Monday to watch our Hallowe'en Parade and those who contributed to many class parties. It was an exciting, and long day for the kids as they started the week, but well worth the effort!

Congratulations to the Junior Boys' Football team as they won the City Championship on Tuesday at Birchmount. Thank you to Mr. Kuru and Mr. Bracht for coaching this year.
