October 31st, 2010

A big thank you to the grade 8 students for organizing the "Haunted House". This has become quite an exciting tradition at LKS! Another thank you to the community for coming to see the Hallowe'en Parade...again a great tradition that is so exciting for the kids. Have a wonderful time this weekend if you are trick or treating.

We've had a few cases of lice in the school since September. Please call the school if your child has lice as we need to send a letter home informing all parents of the class. It really is the best prevention to help control the situation. If your child does get them, please do not return to school unless all the nits are gone. . The public health nurse and some parent volunteers are going to check all the kids in the school next week. I've included the Toronto Public Health website if you want further information: http://www.toronto.ca/health/hl_index.htm

We'd like to thank all the parents who have come out to support the many sports teams that have had tournaments and finals over the last couple of weeks. The students and staff really appreciate a cheering audience. Congratulations to all the students for putting your best foot forward. Whether you win or lose, you always show a positive LKS spirit!

Congratulations to all the students who ran for Student Council. It takes a lot of confidence to give a speech in front of your peers, and you all did a great job. Good luck to the candidates.

Thank you again, to Mrs. Laco for organizing our Pizza Lunches. The students really enjoyed their lunches today!

Today we celebrated the Character Trait of Responsibility at our Sharing Assemblies. This is a trait that can be understood from Kindergarten to Grade 8 and it is evident that we have many LKS students who display this trait. Please follow up with the discussion of responsibility at home.

Thank you to everyone who came to our Internet Safety Presentation on Wednesday. Mrs. Dellandrea presented some key messages for parents to take back home and we will forward some links that will provide further tips for you. It's so important that we continue to educate ourselves to provide guidance for our children.

Staff have completed their team goals for the School Improvement Plan. As always, we will create a PowerPoint and present it at Parent Council and on our website.

I have two requests of you: Could you call me if you know someone who could play the bagpipes at our Remembrance Day Assembly. We are still looking for a veteran who may want to speak also. In addition, I'm looking for wood picture frames that would fit grade 8 art drawings (15" X 17" or larger). If you have any old frames you aren't using, we'll take them. Thanks so much!

Kiss and Ride Reminders
Kiss & Ride is still in need of more volunteers to make this valuable service run smoothly. If you can help at least once a month from 8:20-8:50, please contact Nori Ayer at norigeorge@rogers.com .

Unfortunately, at this time, we are not able to escort Kindergarten children to their classroom. And please remember that the volunteers are just that....volunteers helping your children....so please be courteous and polite and understand they are trying their best.

Also please remember that at lunch and after school there is no Kiss & Ride so please help to keep our children safe by keeping the following in mind:
- Remind your children to not wander through the parking lot looking for you
- Please do not park in the exit lanes beside the fence
- Do not park and wait for your children in the lanes and block others from exiting the parking lot.

Happy Thanksgiving

I am so happy to be in a school that keeps us busy. Busy is a good sign because it means that we are doing more for the children. One activity that keeps us busy and that the kids love is Pizza Lunches. Mrs. Laco, our parent rep, reminds everyone that the pizza lunch forms need to be submitted by this Wednesday the 13th. Late forms cannot participate in the first pizza lunch on October 22. Kindergarten participation is only on June 29th and the forms for their lunch will be distributed in May.

Next week,Allison Dellandrea, another parent, has volunteered to present a workshop on Internet safety to our parent community. We are so appreciative as this is such valuable information. We also have the pleasure of working with Mrs. Dellandrea in the classroom with the older students throughout the year. The following will give you an idea of what she will be presenting. We hope to see you there.

Are you wondering where your children might be going on-line?
Struggling to keep up with your kids’ use of technology, and social networking?
Do you want to increase your knowledge about how to guard your kids against inappropriate Internet content, cyberbullying, and on-line predators?
Would you like to learn more about:
• Instant messaging (on computers and handheld devices)
• Social networking sites (Facebook, MSN)
• Strategies for protecting personal information on-line
• “webfilters” and “parental controls”
• Where and how to report on-line exploitation, or concerning content
• Reliable resources for you and your children

If so, please come to this one-hour ‘primer’ in Internet Safety for Parents, led by LKS Mom and Internet Child Exploitation prosecutor, Allison Dellandrea, and a member of the Toronto Police Service.

Date & Times: Wednesday, October 13th. 2-3 pm or 6-7 pm
Location: Room 211

PLEASE SIGN IN AT THE OFFICE FIRST FOR A VISITOR TAG!

We hope you all have a wonderful weekend with your family and friends.

October 1st, 2010

On Thursday afternoon we all participated in our annual Terry Fox Walk. What a wonderful day to celebrate the good work of Terry Fox! The children really enjoy this very special event, and they truly begin to understand the idea of "giving back" as they continue to grow. These are the values that we as a community will continue to instill in our young people. Thank you to all the parents who attended.

We'd also like to welcome Mrs. Pagnotta who will be teaching the junior French as Mme Locicero retired last week.

Good luck to our sports teams over the next couple of weeks. Be the Best that You Can Be!
